The shampoo is gone, and so is any sense of dignity. Thrown into a dungeon after having his prized shampoo stolen, a fallen samurai has only one option left: cut through everything standing in the way and take it back.

Samurai Shampoo Classic is a free-to-play, melee-based roguelike dungeon crawler from a small student development team. Slicing through randomly generated dungeons with unique weapons, gathering items from chests, and unlocking new perks after every boss defeated, you’ll fight through three distinct floors on a quest to reclaim what’s rightfully yours.

What Makes It Different?

  • Run through randomly generated dungeons that change with every attempt
  • Explore three distinct floors, each with its own style, rooms, and enemies
  • Slice through enemies with a variety of unique weapons
  • Gather items from chests to aid the journey deeper into the dungeon
  • Unlock powerful perks after defeating each boss
  • Spend coins earned from enemies on weapons and items in shops
  • Play completely free, with an optional donation to support the developers

A Quest Built on Pure Melee Combat

Samurai Shampoo Classic keeps combat focused entirely on close-quarters swordplay, with unique weapons found or bought along the way shaping how each run feels. Perks unlocked after boss fights add real variety on top of that, meaning a run that starts with a familiar weapon can quickly turn into something completely different depending on which perks show up. That simplicity, paired with genuine build variation, keeps the core loop feeling fresh across repeated attempts.

Small Team, Big Ambition

Built by a small team of student developers, Samurai Shampoo Classic picked up recognition at Windesheim University’s Winnovation 2021, taking home Best Entertainment Game and finishing as runner-up for Best Overall Game. That scrappy, passion-project energy carries through into the final product, offering a tight, focused roguelike experience without ever charging a cent to play it.

How Long Does a Run Take?

A single, successful run takes about 25 to 45 minutes. Because it’s a roguelite, individual run times can be much shorter if defeated early, or slightly longer when taking time to explore. The game features three procedurally generated dungeon floors and a few bosses, with short or failed runs typically landing between 5 to 20 minutes depending on how early defeat comes, and average successful runs falling into that 25 to 45 minute range. Speedrunners can push through in as little as 3 to 10 minutes, while an average player looking to see everything and unlock all achievements can expect to spend 10 to 20 hours total.

Good If You Like…

If you enjoyed Rogue Legacy, Katanaut, or bit Dungeon, Samurai Shampoo Classic’s mix of melee combat and roguelike dungeon crawling should be well worth a look.
