Rogue Legacy helped popularize the modern roguelite by introducing a clever generational progression system. Each time your hero dies, you continue as one of their descendants, inheriting unique traits that can be beneficial, challenging, or downright ridiculous. Gold earned during each run is used to upgrade your family manor, permanently strengthening future generations. Combined with fast-paced 2D platforming, procedurally generated castle layouts, and challenging boss fights, it created a rewarding loop where every failed run still felt like progress.
