Every death in Dragon Is Dead ends with a choice already made: keep the gear you earned or lose the gold and buffs that carried you there. That tradeoff sits at the center of TeamSuneat’s 2D dark fantasy action roguelite, which released on June 6, 2025. You play as a Successor, an immortal warrior who revives after each fall with equipment, runes, and class unlocks intact, then pushes back out from the hub town of Cliffshire into increasingly corrupted zones.

Three classes define how runs are structured. The Spellblade opens the game and blends close and mid-range attacks across fire, frost, and lightning elements. Unlock progress opens the Berserker, a heavy melee fighter that deliberately sacrifices HP and positioning to generate massive damage output, and the Hunter, a ranged fighter who keeps distance through thrown weapons, poison, and beast abilities that layer damage over time. Each class carries its own skill tree, and those trees interact directly with the rune system: Rune Stones dropped by Elite enemies and bosses can be crafted into Legendary and Mythic equipment, and the combination of slotted runes and skill tree choices is what actually defines a build’s direction. Artifacts gathered during a run stack additional synergies on top, making late-run power spikes feel earned rather than random.

Combat demands commitment. Attacks are telegraphed, dodges are precise, and aggressive combos reward players who read enemy patterns rather than play defensively. Stage layouts reshuffle between runs, varying enemy placement, hazards, and loot distribution across multi-layered 2D environments. The overarching goal is reaching the Citadel at the heart of the Corruption left behind by the fallen dragon Guernian, with major bosses gating progress and a fragmented narrative about the Black Dawn woven through the zones.

The game shipped on June 6, 2025, and received a dense run of patch updates through June and July addressing stability issues, including a gray screen launch error. A substantial v1.1 update arrived in December 2025, followed by v1.1 content previews, a v1.105 patch in January 2026, and the v1.2 and v1.21 updates in February and March 2026, indicating active post-launch development across the game’s first nine months.

A first session typically means learning the Spellblade’s elemental combos through two or three short runs, dying to a boss, returning with better-rolled gear, and beginning to understand which rune combinations the skill tree is actually built around.
