Dead Cells helped turn the “roguevania” into a genre of its own, combining the movement and exploration of a metroidvania with the pressure of permadeath. You play as a failed alchemic experiment that survives by taking control of abandoned bodies, fighting through an ever-changing island where every death sends you back to the beginning. There are no checkpoints to fall back on, so reaching the final boss means surviving the entire journey in a single run.

The island may reset, but not everything is lost. New weapons, abilities, mutations, levels, and routes can remain available across future attempts, gradually expanding what you might discover on the next journey. Branching paths give you choices over where to travel, while the equipment you find determines how you fight through the enemies and bosses waiting ahead.

What Makes It Different?

  • Combines roguelite runs with metroidvania-inspired exploration

  • Supports Steam Workshop content

The Island Never Gives You the Same Route Twice

Dead Cells is built around moving forward without knowing exactly what the next area will look like. The castle changes between runs, and branching exits give you some control over where the journey continues. Certain routes may lead through different levels or toward different threats, so reaching familiar ground does not mean the rest of the climb will follow the same path.

Unlockable skills can open areas that were inaccessible during earlier attempts. Returning with new movement abilities creates fresh routes through locations you may already recognize, giving exploration a sense of progress even when the run itself ends in failure.

Your Equipment Decides the Pace

The weapons and abilities you collect have a huge influence on how a run feels. Melee weapons keep fights close and aggressive, ranged options let you attack from safer positions, while grenades, traps, and turrets can control areas or damage enemies without forcing you to stand directly beside them.

You cannot rely on the same setup appearing every time. Each attempt means adapting to whatever equipment becomes available and deciding whether a new weapon is strong enough to replace something already working. A comfortable build can change quickly when the island offers a better tool or sends you into an area where your current setup struggles.

Combat Rewards Confidence, Not Carelessness

Dead Cells moves quickly, but rushing blindly through enemies is rarely a good idea. Attacks need to be read, openings need to be recognized, and the dodge roll is often the difference between escaping safely and losing the body carrying your entire run.

The controls are designed to respond immediately, making combat feel sharp whether you are attacking, jumping between platforms, or rolling through danger. Enemies can still punish mistakes heavily, especially deeper into the island, but their attacks can be learned. Each defeat gives you a clearer idea of what went wrong and what needs to change next time.

Death Still Leaves Something Behind

Losing a body ends the current attempt, but permanent unlocks continue to broaden what future runs can contain. Weapons, abilities, mutations, paths, and new levels gradually become available, giving you more possibilities each time you return to the starting dungeon.

That progress doesn’t remove the need to complete a run cleanly. There are still no checkpoints, and reaching the end requires surviving every biome and boss placed along your chosen route. The difference is that repeated attempts give you more tools, more options, and a better understanding of how the island works.

Good If You Like…

Players who enjoy Hades, Rogue Legacy 2, Skul: The Hero Slayer, or Have a Nice Death should appreciate Dead Cells’ fast combat, changing equipment, branching routes, and persistent unlocks.
