Skul: The Hero Slayer, developed by SOUTHPAW GAMES and released on January 20, 2021, is a 2D action-platformer roguelite in which a lone skeleton named Skul fights through procedurally arranged stages to rescue the captive Demon King from the Imperial Army that destroyed his castle.

The mechanical heart of the game is a dual-skull system: Skul can equip two skulls simultaneously, each representing a distinct character with its own attack speed, range, and power profile. Swapping between them mid-combat is instantaneous, letting players chain different movesets in a single encounter. The roster of available skulls is large, and because each run deals skulls out through normal progression, the combination players end up with varies substantially from attempt to attempt. Each chapter ends with a boss enemy corrupted by Dark Quartz, a substance the game uses as both a lore device and a mechanical escalation — these fights demand pattern recognition and punish passivity.

Recurring Adventurer enemies serve as elite encounters outside of bosses, framing the role-reversal premise of a demon hunting its hunters. The game sits toward the demanding end of the action-roguelite spectrum; skull synergies reward deliberate building, and bosses are built to end careless runs quickly.

  • Two simultaneously equipped skulls, each with distinct stats and attacks, swappable in real time
  • Procedurally generated stage layouts across multiple chapters
  • Named Adventurer enemies as recurring elite encounters with their own behaviors
  • Chapter-ending bosses with Dark Quartz corruption as a difficulty framing device
  • Large skull roster enabling wide run-to-run variety in playstyle

The game’s update arc is substantial. Patches through 2023 moved the version from the 1.7 range up through 1.8, with releases in February, March, and May of 2023 followed by a significant 1.8.0 update in November 2023 that arrived alongside a Demon King Castle Defense mode and the announcement of a Mythology Pack DLC — the first named DLC for the game. A soundtrack update also landed in late 2023. By December 2023, SOUTHPAW GAMES announced the game had sold two million copies. Development continued into 2024, with a 1.9.0 update in April and a follow-up patch in June.
