Luck be a Landlord

TrampolineTales is a solo developer whose work centers on compact, system-rich designs. Their best-known game, Luck be a Landlord, released on January 6, 2023, and builds its entire premise around a slot machine you must spin to earn rent money before your landlord collects — framing the run as a fight against an escalating series of payments.

Each run begins with a bare slot machine and a small pool of symbols. After each spin, the game offers a choice of new symbols to add to the reels, drawn from a randomized selection, so no two runs share the same build path. Symbols carry individual effects and interact with one another — a symbol might multiply adjacent matches, feed into a chain triggered by another type, or generate bonus coins under specific conditions. Finding and exploiting these interactions is the primary strategic work. Items, also randomized per run, layer on further modifiers. The cumulative result is a build-crafting exercise dressed as gambling, where the slot machine’s apparent randomness gradually gives way to a constructed engine.

What sets it apart from card-based roguelikes is the spatial and combinatorial nature of that engine: symbols occupy reel positions and fire in sequence, so the order and adjacency of what you have placed matters alongside what you have chosen. The game also includes full screen reader support, outputting highlighted text to the operating system clipboard so that assistive software can read it aloud, with keyboard and controller input recommended for that mode.

Following its January 2023 release, TrampolineTales maintained a steady patch cadence through the v1.2.x series, issuing numerous updates from early 2024 into mid-2024 and continuing into 2025. The developer also organized a speedrun challenge with bounties in April 2024 and has attended conventions including PopCon Indy and MAGFest. The most recent update in the feed is v1.2.24, issued in January 2025.
