In Papercraft Tactics, simply collecting powerful equipment isn’t enough. Where you place each item, which direction it’s facing, and what it’s connected to matters just as much. The best builds don’t happen by accident. They come from gradually turning an ordinary inventory into a carefully planned chain reaction that practically fights the battle for you.

Papercraft Tactics is a run-based grid-inventory roguelike where every expedition revolves around building increasingly elaborate item combinations. Weapons, potions, wands, shields, and trinkets all interact through a living backpack, triggering one another in carefully arranged sequences once combat begins. Between encounters you’ll draft new equipment, visit shops, and refine your layout, while limited-use tactical cards let you step in at exactly the right moment to duplicate attacks, remove debuffs, or manipulate the action queue before the next turn unfolds.

What Makes It Different?

  • Build your character by arranging items inside a living grid-based backpack
  • Rotate and connect equipment to create powerful chain reactions
  • Watch linked items trigger automatically during turn-based auto battles
  • Play tactical cards to manipulate the action queue during combat
  • Draft new items, visit shops, and refine your build between encounters
  • Choose from different heroes with unique passive abilities and stat profiles
  • Experiment with scaling, elemental, heavy, fragile, and mimic item combinations
  • Explore a paper-theater world filled with events, elite enemies, and bosses
  • Combines inventory management, auto battling, and deckbuilding-inspired strategy into every run

Your Backpack Is the Real Battlefield

Every new item creates another possibility. A sword might become significantly stronger when placed beside the right potion, while a wand can feed power into nearby equipment to keep an entire chain of effects flowing. Rearranging your inventory is rarely about making everything fit. It’s about discovering how each piece can make the others stronger.

Once combat begins, all of that preparation comes to life. Linked items activate in sequence, filling the action queue with attacks, defensive abilities, spells, and special effects that play out exactly as you designed them. Watching a carefully assembled layout unfold exactly as planned is one of the game’s biggest rewards.

Planning Comes Before the Fighting

Although much of the combat resolves automatically, you’re never completely hands-off. Tactical cards give you opportunities to intervene at crucial moments, whether that means duplicating an important action, removing an unwanted effect, or forcing a key ability to trigger immediately.

Those small decisions often make the difference between an ordinary build and one capable of overcoming the increasingly dangerous enemies waiting deeper into the run. The more familiar you become with the different item interactions, the more satisfying those moments become.

Every New Run Solves a Different Puzzle

New heroes, randomized item drafts, shops, events, and enemy resistances ensure every expedition develops differently. A layout that dominates one run may struggle in the next, encouraging you to adapt instead of chasing exactly the same strategy every time.

The result feels less like assembling the strongest collection of equipment and more like building an intricate machine where every single piece has an important job to do.

How Long Does a Run Take?

An official average run length has not yet been established for Papercraft Tactics. Based on similar inventory-management roguelikes and auto battlers, individual successful runs will typically vary depending on your build and decision-making, with many runs likely lasting around 30 to 60 minutes.

Controller Support

Papercraft Tactics offers full controller support for Xbox and PlayStation controllers.

Good If You Like…

Players who enjoy Backpack Hero, Backpack Battles, The Last Flame, or Astronarch should appreciate Papercraft Tactics’ satisfying focus on creating intricate item synergies, where careful planning before each battle is every bit as important as the fight itself.
