Death was just the beginning. Somewhere beneath the world of the living lies an underworld run on Mahjong, where every hand you draw and every tile you play could be the difference between climbing further into the depths or facing final judgment.

Demonic Mahjong is a roguelike deckbuilding game from developer Boxed Lighting Games, inspired by the timeless mechanics of Mahjong. Using the tiles in your hand to craft powerful combinations, you’ll build a team of underworld allies, collect relics and offerings, and navigate a shifting path of events on your way to facing down the bosses guarding the deepest parts of the underworld.

What Makes It Different?

  • Combines familiar Mahjong scoring with roguelike deckbuilding progression
  • Recruit from 100 unique spirit allies, each shifting your core strategy
  • Collect from 100 relics that provide permanent buffs and growth
  • Use 35 offerings to manipulate your hand, your deck, and even your luck
  • Enhance your tiles with 17 tile spirits and 12 tile variants
  • Choose your path through 10 regular events and 90 special events
  • Face off against 24 unique bosses, each with their own active and passive skills

Familiar Tiles, New Rules

Demonic Mahjong keeps its scoring rooted in basic Mahjong rules, so anyone who already knows how to play is halfway to understanding the game. Layered on top of that foundation is a full roguelike structure, where the tiles you draw are only part of the equation. Success depends just as much on the spirit allies you recruit and the relics and offerings you collect along the way, each one capable of reshaping how your hand comes together and pushing your strategy in a different direction.

Build a Team From the Underworld

Every spirit ally brought into your team carries their own active and passive skills, and building tile combinations around specific characters is how distinct playstyles start to take shape. Skills can be levelled up as you progress, giving your favourite allies room to grow stronger across a run. Relics and offerings add another layer on top of that, offering permanent buffs or letting you bend the rules of your hand and deck in your favour.

A Path Through Hell, One Event at a Time

Not every stop on the journey through the underworld is a fight. Along the way, you’ll run into a mix of regular and special events, from sharing a cup of tea at Granny Meng’s Tea House to helping a wandering ghost with an unusual request, and the choices made in these moments carry through into the battles that follow. Eventually, that path leads to one of 24 bosses drawn from the underworld’s own mythology, including Granny Meng, Ox Head and Horse Face, and the Four Judges, each demanding a different strategy to overcome.

How Long Does a Run Take?

A typical run in Demonic Mahjong generally takes about 20 to 45 minutes to complete. A few factors affect how long a run runs. Taking time to read specific relic effects, strategize with offerings, or arrange your tile combinations naturally lengthens a run, while navigating special events, like a stop at Granny Meng’s Tea House, adds time depending on how you read and react to what’s in front of you. Later stage or end run boss battles tend to demand more careful play too, which can push total run time closer to an hour as you work out strategies for specific bosses.
