The tavern at the center of Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers has turned blackjack into something far stranger than a race to 21. Every opponent plays by their own rules, and beating them means drawing cards, deciding when to stand, and using the effects attached to your deck before the dealer can wear down your health. Aces and face cards are only the beginning, with tarot cards, business cards, birthday cards, hall passes, and plenty of other unusual additions waiting to drag each match further away from ordinary blackjack.

A run takes you through different areas of the tavern, where you’ll challenge its patrons, buy new cards, remove unwanted ones, open booster packs, recover health, and take part in events and minigames. The suit you choose at the beginning also gives the deck an early direction: Hearts can restore health, Spades provide protection, Diamonds help generate currency, and Clubs increase damage. With more than 300 cards, 60 opponents, unlockable starter decks, and chips that can activate special effects, every trip through the tavern gives you another way to stack the odds against the house.

Knowing When to Take Another Card

Each battle still revolves around the central risk of blackjack: deciding whether your current total is strong enough or whether drawing again is worth the chance of going over 21. The difference is that the cards in your deck can carry effects capable of healing you, damaging the opponent, generating protection, or changing what happens when they are played.

That makes every draw about more than its printed value. A card that pushes your total dangerously high may also provide exactly the effect needed to survive the turn, while a weaker hand can still become valuable when the right combination of abilities activates around it.

Choosing a Suit Before Entering the Tavern

Your starting suit gives the run its first sense of direction. Hearts offer healing, Spades provide protection, Diamonds create more money for shop purchases, and Clubs increase the damage you deal.

That choice affects which cards are most useful as the deck grows. A defensive deck may focus on staying alive through longer battles, while a more aggressive approach can try to defeat opponents before their own cards become a problem. The starting suit does not decide the entire run, but it gives you a foundation to build around from the first table onward.

Filling the Deck With Anything but Normal Cards

The tavern is full of cards that would never appear in a standard blackjack deck. Tarot cards sit beside business cards, birthday cards, hall passes, and other objects that have been turned into playable tools, each bringing its own value or effect into battle.

New cards can be purchased and added as you progress, but expanding the deck without a plan can make useful combinations harder to draw. Removing weaker cards becomes just as important as finding stronger ones, allowing the deck to move away from its ordinary beginnings and toward a more focused strategy.

Every Patron Changes the Rules

The tavern’s 60 opponents are not simply different faces sitting behind the same deck. Each one brings their own approach to blackjack, forcing you to adapt as you move deeper into the run.

A strategy that handles one patron comfortably may struggle against the next, particularly when their rules interfere with the cards or effects you have been relying on. Building a successful deck means preparing for more than a single type of match and finding ways to keep it useful when the table begins working against you.

Finding Help Between Tables

Not every room leads directly into another blackjack battle. You can visit shops, recover health, open booster packs, take part in minigames, and encounter events that offer more ways to improve the deck or gather chips.

These stops give you room to repair the damage from earlier matches and decide what the deck needs before the next opponent. Sometimes that means buying another powerful card, while other runs are better served by removing something unreliable or saving resources for what may be waiting further inside the tavern.

Good If You Like…

Players who enjoy Balatro, Luck be a Landlord, Slay the Spire, or Roguebook should appreciate Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers’ rule-breaking cards, run-based deckbuilding, unusual opponents, and constant pressure to decide whether one more draw is worth the risk.
