Every run of Shattered Pixel Dungeon begins with a single question: which of six heroes can carry you through twenty-six floors of increasingly hostile procedurally generated dungeon? Developed by Shattered Pixel, the game is a traditional turn-based roguelike in which death is permanent and each attempt reshuffles layouts, enemy placements, item pools, and traps from scratch. The result is a game that is mechanically legible within minutes but tactically deep enough that a first victory can take dozens of attempts.
The six heroes — Warrior, Duelist, Mage, Cleric, Rogue, and Huntress — each operate on distinct mechanical logic. The Rogue exploits terrain and stealth; the Huntress controls range and positioning; the Mage and Cleric draw on different schools of magic. As a run progresses, each hero earns talent points, selects a subclass (the Duelist can become a dual-wielding Champion; the Cleric a Paladin; the Huntress a Sniper), and eventually unlocks one of three endgame abilities. This layered progression means build decisions compound over the course of a run without carrying over between them.
Equipment is the other major axis of depth. Weapons and armor can be enchanted, upgraded, and augmented; magical wands, rings, artifacts, and trinkets add damage, defense, or utility. An alchemy system lets players craft consumable items from ingredients found in the dungeon, providing a resource-management layer alongside combat. An in-game catalog with over five hundred entries tracks everything encountered, rewarding thorough play. Nine stackable challenge modifiers and more than a hundred achievements extend the game well past a first win.

Shattered Pixel Dungeon is an open-source project that grew out of Pixel Dungeon, the original game released by Watabou in late 2012. Shattered Pixel forked the codebase in 2014 with the initial aim of rebalancing the original, but steadily expanded it into a distinct game over the following decade. It arrived on Steam on March 23, 2022. Major numbered releases have continued at a steady pace: v3.2.0 shipped in August 2025 and introduced thrown weapon sets among other additions, while v3.3.0 followed in December 2025 with an Imp Quest area. As of early 2026 the team was preparing new enchants and updated pixel art. Updates have historically arrived roughly every three months. Players who want a no-frills roguelike that rewards careful resource management and mechanical learning — rather than persistent unlocks smoothing the difficulty — will find Shattered Pixel Dungeon a particularly honest test of those skills.
