Ghost hunting is difficult enough without trying to keep an ageing steam locomotive running at the same time. Rhyolite puts you and up to three other players aboard a haunted train racing across a supernatural Wild West railway, where every encounter with a ghost train becomes a frantic balancing act between fighting spirits, repairing damaged equipment, and keeping the locomotive from falling apart. Your objective isn’t simply to survive. You need to gather enough data on each ghost train before you can finally capture it and continue your journey.

Every expedition unfolds differently thanks to changing enemy attacks, curses, and train upgrades. Ghostly assaults can randomly lock doors, swap crew members around the train, or even scatter important items just when you need them most, forcing everyone to react quickly as the situation spirals into controlled chaos. Whether you’re playing solo alongside Frank the Automaton or tackling the railway with a full crew, no two journeys follow quite the same script.

Keeping the Train Alive

Your train is just as important as the people riding it. Every battle demands constant attention as equipment breaks down, systems require repairs, and the crew rushes from carriage to carriage trying to stay ahead of whatever the ghosts throw at them.

Because you’re sharing a limited space, deciding who should repair, who should fight, and who should respond to the latest disaster quickly becomes one of the game’s biggest challenges. Even a small problem can snowball into complete chaos if nobody is available to deal with it.

Ghosts Never Fight Fair

The enemy isn’t content with simply attacking your health bar. Ghost trains unleash strange effects that interfere with the crew itself, creating problems that can’t always be solved by swinging a weapon.

One moment a critical doorway may suddenly become inaccessible. The next, players can find themselves swapped into unfamiliar parts of the train while essential equipment disappears from where it was left. Every encounter asks the team to adapt to new complications instead of relying on a fixed strategy.

Every Journey Changes

Procedural variety sits at the centre of Rhyolite’s replayability. Different combinations of attacks, curses, and train upgrades mean the railway rarely behaves the same way twice.

One run might hand your crew useful upgrades early on, while another demands that you overcome increasingly disruptive curses before you can build any real momentum. Learning how to respond to whatever combination appears becomes just as important as mastering the train itself.

Better Together, But Never Easy

Although Rhyolite can be played alone with help from Frank the Automaton, it’s clearly designed around cooperation. A full crew allows players to split responsibilities, coordinate repairs, and respond to emergencies much more efficiently.

That doesn’t necessarily make the railway easier to survive. With ghost attacks constantly disrupting the team’s plans, good communication often becomes the difference between capturing another ghost train and watching your own locomotive fall apart before reaching the next stop.

How Long Does a Run Take?

A successful run in Rhyolite typically takes 45-60 minutes, although that can vary depending on whether you’re playing solo or in co-op. Standard victories involve surviving up to nine rounds and defeating at least three of the game’s nine bosses, while players pursuing the secret ending should expect a longer session. The pace of your group, repair efficiency, and the difficulty of each boss encounter all have a noticeable impact on the overall runtime.
