Most roguelikes let you pause, plan, and execute. One Step From Eden, developed solo by Thomas Moon Kang, refuses that comfort entirely: it grafts deck-building onto real-time bullet-hell combat, forcing players to select and cast spells from a hand of cards while simultaneously dodging a screen full of projectiles. The result is a game that demands both strategic construction and twitch execution at the same time, a combination the genre rarely attempts.
Each run moves through procedurally generated zones toward the titular Eden. Players choose from nine characters, each with distinct spell affinities and playstyles that reshape how a deck can be built. With over 200 spells and more than 100 artifacts available, the combinatorial space is wide enough that two runs rarely feel alike. Artifacts can swing power dramatically, rewarding players who identify synergies under pressure. Enemies evolve as the run progresses, and bosses drop rewards that feed directly into future decisions. The game supports local co-op and PvP, allowing two players to either fight through the world together or turn their decks against each other.
Thomas Moon Kang shipped the game on March 26, 2020, and immediately began a dense patch cycle. Within the first month, updates addressed Flow mechanics, boss reward structures, and chaos systems, followed by C# mod support in April. A major expansion arrived in December 2020. The first anniversary in March 2021 brought patch v1.6, and later that year patch 1.7 delivered sprite updates across the cast. The third anniversary in March 2023 saw v1.8 refresh the Saffron and Reva character art. Full Steam Workshop support extended the game’s life further. In March 2024, a standalone spinoff, Duelists of Eden, launched on Steam. By 2026, Kang had moved into a new project called Re;Match, with One Step From Eden’s Saffron character appearing in its Kickstarter campaign.
For players who found Slay the Spire too contemplative, One Step From Eden occupies the space where card theory meets reaction time.
