A run in Nuclear Throne puts you in a top-down wasteland, moving and shooting in real time through procedurally generated rooms packed with mutants and monsters. Each area ends when everything in it is dead. Fallen enemies drop radiation, which accumulates until your character levels up and chooses one of several random mutations — passive upgrades that alter movement, damage, regeneration, or weapon behavior. Weapons are picked up from the floor and from crates, and the pool is wide enough that no two runs equip the same loadout. Death is permanent and sends you back to the first area with nothing carried over.

The game is developed by Vlambeer and released December 5, 2015. It is a roguelite in the action-shooter mold rather than a turn-based dungeon crawler: positioning, dodge timing, and weapon switching matter as much as which mutations you select. Each playable character is a different mutant with a unique starting ability and a distinct mutation pool, so the species you pick shapes what a run can become. A fish character plays nothing like a plant or a robot. Reaching the Nuclear Throne itself is the stated goal, and it sits well beyond the difficulty most players will clear on early attempts.

Players who want deliberate, turn-based decision-making or any form of persistent unlocks between runs will find little traction here — the game offers no between-run economy and no unlockable starting loadouts.

Nuclear Throne spent an extended period in Early Access before its full launch, accumulating numbered updates throughout development. Update 96, titled The Real Deal, shipped on the launch date of December 5, 2015. Update 97 followed ten days later, and the substantial Update 98 — named Thronebutt — arrived in February 2016. The game then went quiet for nearly two years before Update 99 shipped in November 2017, where it remained the final update for roughly eight years. Update 100 released on December 5, 2025, marking the game’s ten-year anniversary, with a beta build having been made available in the months prior.
