Three years is a long time to spend in Early Access, but Yet Another Zombie Survivors has used that time well. Since first appearing on Steam in July 2023, Awesome Games Studio’s squad-building bullet heaven has steadily grown into one of the genre’s standout success stories, attracting more than 600,000 players along the way.
On August 20, that journey finally reaches its biggest milestone yet as the game officially launches in version 1.0 across Steam, GOG, PlayStation, and Xbox, with a Nintendo Switch release set to follow soon after.
If you’ve somehow missed it over the past three years, Yet Another Zombie Survivors takes a slightly different approach to the ever-growing bullet heaven genre. Rather than controlling a single character, you’re gradually assembling an entire squad of survivors, each bringing their own weapons, abilities, and upgrade paths into battle. Characters attack automatically, leaving you free to focus on movement, positioning, and making the right upgrade decisions, as the zombie horde grows from a manageable threat into absolute chaos.
The real strategy comes from the way those survivors work together. Every run revolves around discovering powerful synergies between weapons, perks, and equipment, with seemingly small decisions snowballing into wildly different builds by the end of a run. Whether you’re chasing massive explosions across the screen or building a squad capable of shredding thousands of undead without slowing down, experimenting with new combinations has always been one of the game’s biggest strengths.
Version 1.0 Is More Than Just a Launch
Awesome Games Studio has confirmed that the full release introduces a brand-new Hub area complete with story content and side quests, giving players a central base between runs for the first time. Alongside that comes:
- An entirely new Survivor
- A fifth map
- Arena bosses
- Optional challenge modes
- Additional achievements…
As well as further polish across the entire experience. The developers have also spent months refining balance, performance, and quality-of-life improvements based on community feedback gathered throughout Early Access.
It’s a substantial update that feels designed to reward returning players while also giving newcomers the best possible place to jump in.
The End of Early Access, The Beginning of the Journey
Although version 1.0 marks the end of Early Access, Awesome Games Studio has already made it clear this isn’t where development stops. The team has repeatedly described the full release as a major milestone rather than the finish line, with plans to continue supporting Yet Another Zombie Survivors after launch with future updates and additional content.
Few roguelikes spend three years evolving alongside their community before reaching full release, and even fewer emerge with the kind of following Yet Another Zombie Survivors has built. On August 20, that long Early Access journey finally comes to a close, giving both returning survivors and first-time players the chance to experience the game at its biggest and most complete yet.
