Life begins again at the foot of an imposing mountain, and climbing it is the only way forward. A century-old war has left its mark on everything up there, and uncovering what happened means fighting through procedurally generated terrain with a growing team of companions at your back.
Tears of Vanfell is an action-packed dungeon crawler from developer Lazy Cat Games, combining roguelike and hack-‘n-slash elements. Choosing from a wide cast of characters, swapping weapons and abilities on the climb, and teaming up with up to three other players, you’ll explore and ascend the Mountain, defeat its Bosses, and gradually uncover the story behind the war that shaped it.
What Makes It Different?
- Climb a procedurally generated Mountain that shifts with every expedition
- Choose from a wide cast of characters, each bringing their own skills
- Pick up new abilities, weapons, and equipment on every run up the Mountain
- Face down Bosses guarding key points along the climb
- Explore solo, with an AI companion, or with up to three other players online
- Build out a campsite between expeditions, recruiting explorers and specialists
- Uncover a story about the aftermath of a century-old war
A Mountain Built for Teamwork
Rather than a fixed dungeon layout, the Mountain in Tears of Vanfell reshuffles with every expedition, keeping each climb feeling fresh. Online co-op supports up to four players at once, and swapping weapons and abilities picked up along the way lets a team adapt on the fly to whatever the Mountain throws at them. For solo players, bringing along another member of the camp offers a middle ground between tackling things alone and coordinating with a full party.
Between expeditions, the campsite serves as a quiet home base, starting out as just the player and their thoughts before gradually filling with other explorers and specialists willing to help out. Getting to know these characters and their motivations ties directly into the broader story, which slowly reveals itself to be tangled up in the aftermath of a war fought a hundred years earlier.
How Long Does a Run Take?
The average playtime is roughly 1.7 hours for general engagement on Chapter 1, while a full story playthrough takes about 7 hours. Median playtime sits around 3.3 hours, and the full story playthrough for the complete release version takes around 7 hours, though this varies by playstyle and skill.
Controller Support
Tears of Vanfell features Full Controller Support for Xbox Controllers and PlayStation Controllers.
Good If You Like…
If you enjoyed Sephiria, Dungreed, or Enter the Gungeon, Tears of Vanfell’s mix of co-op dungeon crawling and roguelike progression should be well worth a look. It’s not out yet, but a free demo is already available to try ahead of its September 2026 release.
