Where most twin-stick shooters reward pure aggression, Blazing Beaks from Applava builds a tension around restraint: the artifact system tempts players with powerful items that carry escalating curses, making greed a measurable risk rather than a playstyle suggestion. The game released on May 10, 2019.
Runs take place across procedurally generated levels populated with mutants and monsters, played from a top-down perspective with ranged combat at the center. Ten playable characters each carry distinct abilities, broadening how any given run unfolds without relying on a single dominant strategy. Items and loot drops are randomized per run, and a seeded mode lets players lock in a specific level configuration and replay it exactly — useful for comparison or practice. A daily mode generates one shared run and posts results to a leaderboard, adding a competitive layer to the otherwise solo structure.
Beyond the standard story mode, which supports two players locally, Blazing Beaks includes a separate tournament mode for two to four local players. That mode offers five distinct formats: a standard deathmatch, a one-gun mode where every player shares the same randomly assigned weapon, a drop-hearts mode where damage produces collectible health, a skull-keeper mode that subtracts HP from anyone who cannot hold a golden skull for a set duration, and a hunting mode built around a throwable spear that must be physically retrieved before it can be thrown again. These are genuinely different games within the same package rather than minor rule variations.
A community character modding system lets players build, share, and load custom characters, extending the roster beyond the ten shipped with the game.
Applava supported the game actively after its May 2019 release. A content update in December 2019 added new material, and daily leaderboards launched in June 2019 shortly after release. A substantial v1.2 content update arrived in May 2020, followed by several incremental patches through mid-2020. Updates continued into late 2020, with v1.3 reaching its final patch in December 2020 labeled Update 42. A three-year anniversary contest ran in May 2022, and a new game announcement appeared in May 2026.
Blazing Beaks occupies similar territory to Enter the Gungeon but distinguishes itself through its local multiplayer depth and the artifact-curse tradeoff that makes item pickup a genuine decision rather than an automatic gain.
