Spellbook Demonslayers
Every run in Spellbook Demonslayers begins with a spellbook — a structured set of abilities whose hidden potential the player unlocks by surviving long enough to master it. Developed by Xendra and released on November 2, 2022, the game drops the player into a single arena where demons pour in from all sides and survival depends on stacking upgrades fast enough to keep pace with the escalating horde.
Combat is automated in the bullet-heaven tradition, but Xendra layers meaningful choices on top. Auras can be evolved and mutated into distinct forms, enemies can be killed to steal their powers and accumulate stacking buffs, and a Shady Smuggler vendor offers Illegal Upgrades that bend or outright break normal character rules in exchange for risk. Aim mode — autoaim, manual, or directional — is selectable before a run, giving the game a wider input range than most genre peers. Difficulty and reward density are both adjustable, with charms, demonic essence, and equipment persisting between runs and feeding back into build customization.
- Multiple spellbooks, each with its own upgrade tree to unlock across runs
- Enemy ability theft that stacks buffs throughout a single session
- Illegal Upgrades from the Shady Smuggler that restructure how a character functions
- Aura evolution and mutation paths for distinct late-run effects
- Three aim modes to suit different playstyle preferences
- Persistent charms and demonic essence earned between runs
The game’s update history reflects steady solo development. Early post-launch work in mid-2023 concentrated on balance and quality of life, with several rapid patches in July 2023 followed by two named content updates — Oblivion and Enigma — adding spellbooks, spells, and new features. A third major update, the Apocalypse Update, was previewed in a playable demo released in September 2024, with that demo noted as substantially different from the base game. As of early 2026, a new demo version was in preparation, suggesting the Apocalypse content arc was still being shaped.
Players who enjoy building toward absurd power spikes through layered systems — rather than through tight moment-to-moment skill expression — will find Spellbook Demonslayers occupies that space comfortably.
