Golden Light
Welcome to the Meat Zone, where the walls are watching and the props are hunting you. Somewhere down in the Gut, a loved one is waiting to be rescued, and getting there means surviving a descent that’s equal parts horrifying and absurd.
Golden Light is a procedural dark comedy horror game with roguelike elements from developer Mr. Pink, a survival-horror FPS best described as Prop Hunt where the props hunt you. Descending through procedurally generated levels, scavenging randomized weapons, and eating or throwing whatever grisly objects you can find, you’ll push deeper into an eerie, surreal world to save someone you care about.
What Makes It Different?
- Descend through procedurally generated levels that change every run
- Find randomized weapons and use them against the horrors of the Gut
- Face procedural spooks that keep encounters unpredictable
- Eat or throw items like Bat Head, Corrupted Fetus, Fish Head, and Meat Apple
- Meet strange characters, including a talking bicycle and a dude in the toilet
- Navigate a world where props can come alive and walls are watching
- Tackle Steam Leaderboards and a surreal, psychedelic retro atmosphere
Prop Hunt, in Reverse
The central joke of Golden Light is also its core scare. Anything in the environment could be hunting you, and the line between a harmless piece of scenery and something lethal is never clear. That paranoia gives the game a genuinely unsettling tone, even as the surreal humor keeps pulling things in a stranger direction. Procedural spooks make sure the horror doesn’t settle into a pattern either, so learning where a threat will appear is rarely possible from one run to the next.
Weapons You Can Eat
Golden Light has a very particular sense of humor, and its item system is where that shows up most clearly. Weapons are randomized from run to run, and many of the things scattered through the Meat Zone can be eaten or thrown as part of surviving, from a Bat Head to a Corrupted Fetus to a Fish Head, Fat Lips, or a Meat Apple. Alongside the odd supporting cast, including a talking bicycle and a dude in the toilet, that mix of grotesque scavenging and dark comedy gives the game an identity unlike almost anything else in the genre. PC Gamer called it a great horror roguelike, DreadXP named it its Indie Horror Game of the Year, and Destructoid described it as unimaginably weird.
How Long Does a Run Take?
An average full playthrough or main story run takes approximately 8 to 10 hours in total. A typical session through the procedurally generated meat-zone floors usually lasts anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes, depending on exploration speed, how carefully traps and stealth are managed, and whether you die early. Focused playthroughs of the main objectives average about 8 and a half hours, while reaching full completion or seeing all side content and secrets takes around 69 hours.
Controller Support
Golden Light features Partial Controller Support for Xbox Controllers. Support for other devices is not known.
Good If You Like…
If you enjoyed Monstrum, ODDCORE, or Post Void, Golden Light’s mix of surreal first-person horror and roguelike unpredictability should be well worth a look.
