Despot’s Game is a tactical roguelike autobattler that begins with a group of confused humans waking up naked inside a bizarre post-apocalyptic labyrinth. Armed with whatever weapons they can scavenge, your job is to guide them deeper into the dungeon, recruiting more survivors, equipping them with increasingly ridiculous gear, and somehow keeping enough of them alive to reach the next floor. Combat plays out automatically, leaving you free to focus on building the strangest and strongest army possible.
The longer your expedition lasts, the less ordinary your squad becomes. Ordinary humans quickly evolve into ninjas, cultists, mages, wrestlers, eggheads, pretzel throwers, and dozens of other classes, each with their own abilities and synergies. Between class combinations, mutations, equipment, and the game’s dark sense of humour, every run has a habit of spiralling into complete chaos, often in ways you could never have planned. If you survive long enough, your final challenge isn’t a boss at all, but the overpowered armies assembled by other players.
What Makes It Different?
- Turn ordinary humans into bizarre classes including cultists, ninjas, wrestlers, mages, and pretzel throwers

- Automatic battles that place the emphasis entirely on planning, positioning, and army composition
- A darkly comedic dystopian world filled with strange monsters and absurd humour
- Finish each successful run by battling armies created by other players in asynchronous multiplayer
- Multiple game modes, including the tougher Director’s Cut and seasonal King of the Hill competitions
- Endless opportunities to experiment with wildly different builds on every expedition
How It Plays
Every expedition begins with a handful of fragile humans and very few resources. As you move through the labyrinth you’ll spend tokens recruiting new fighters, buying equipment, feeding your growing army, and deciding which classes are worth investing in. Food is a constant concern, so expanding your squad too quickly can be just as dangerous as entering battle underprepared.
Finding strong synergies is the key to surviving the later floors. Equipping enough matching weapons allows humans to specialise into powerful classes, while mutations unlock entirely new bonuses that can push a promising build into something absurdly overpowered. It’s common for an unexpected mutation or item to convince you to abandon your original strategy and build around a completely different army.
Battles happen automatically, but there’s still plenty to think about before they begin. Positioning your frontline, protecting fragile ranged units, and deciding which humans deserve your best equipment all have a huge impact on the outcome. If your squad survives the labyrinth, they’ll eventually face armies assembled by other players, creating an unpredictable final test that ensures no two successful runs ever end in quite the same way. Players looking for an even tougher challenge can also tackle Director’s Cut mode or compete in the regularly updated King of the Hill seasons.
Good If You Like…
If you enjoy The Last Flame, Tales & Tactics, The Dungeon Beneath, or autobattlers that reward creative builds as much as careful planning, Despot’s Game offers one of the strangest and funniest takes on the genre.
