Rift Wizard 2
There aren’t many roguelikes that hand you hundreds of spells and simply tell you to figure it out. Rift Wizard 2 is built around experimentation from the very beginning, giving you complete control over how your wizard develops while expecting you to survive increasingly brutal tactical encounters with whatever magical arsenal you’ve assembled. Every run becomes an opportunity to discover another combination that somehow works even better than the last.
You play as an immortal amnesiac wizard travelling across the cosmos in pursuit of your nemesis, building a spellbook from an enormous collection of spells, passive skills, magical artifacts, and equipment. Every level presents a fresh tactical challenge, but success isn’t just about creating an overpowered build. It’s about understanding how your choices work together, adapting when unexpected equipment changes your plans, and solving each encounter like a carefully designed puzzle.
The sequel expands on the original with a completely new equipment system that can dramatically reshape a run. A single item might convert one damage type into another, unlock entirely new spell interactions, or push an existing strategy in an unexpected direction. Since every piece of equipment is randomized, no two spellbooks ever evolve in quite the same way.
What Makes It Different?
- Hundreds of spells, passive skills, magical artifacts, and equipment create an enormous variety of possible builds
- A new equipment system introduces powerful item interactions that can completely reshape your strategy
- Choose which portals to enter, giving you control over the challenges you face throughout each run
- Puzzle-like tactical combat focuses on careful planning instead of hidden combat calculations or random outcomes
- Massive multi-tile bosses, procedurally generated enemy variants, and new wizards create constantly evolving encounters
- Spell upgrades are limited to one per spell, encouraging larger and more varied spellbooks
How It Plays
Every run begins with a blank spellbook, but before long you’ll be filling it with new spells, passive skills, equipment, and magical artifacts that gradually transform your wizard into something capable of wiping entire battlefields clean. The challenge isn’t simply finding the strongest abilities. It’s discovering how different spells and equipment interact, then adapting your build whenever a powerful new item opens up possibilities you hadn’t considered.
Each level is entered through the game’s portal system, allowing you to decide which challenges to tackle next instead of following a fixed path. Health and spell charges are restored between levels, shifting the focus away from conserving resources and towards solving each battle as efficiently as possible. With every enemy designed to test your build in different ways, Rift Wizard 2 rewards creative thinking just as much as careful planning, making every victory feel like you’ve solved another magical puzzle rather than simply survived another fight.
Good If You Like…
If you enjoy Caves of Qud, Tales of Maj’Eyal, Golden Krone Hotel, Jupiter Hell, or traditional roguelikes built around deep character building and tactical combat, Rift Wizard 2 is an easy recommendation.
