Tales of Maj’Eyal is a tactical roguelike RPG set in the lore-dense world of Eyal, developed by Netcore Games and released on December 12, 2013. Each run places the player in a procedurally generated dungeon network where they choose from a wide selection of races and classes, then build outward through a deep talent tree system that allows meaningful ability combinations rather than preset paths. Combat is turn-based and grid-positioned, demanding attention to range, terrain, action economy, and the specific threat profile of each enemy encounter.
Character building is the game’s central investment: classes diverge sharply from one another in mechanical identity, and many races and classes must be unlocked through play, giving repeated runs a sense of cumulative discovery without relying on persistent stat bonuses. There are no consumables to hoard and no grinding loops to pad progress — power comes entirely from leveling, talent selection, and equipment found along the way. The game sits firmly toward the punishing end of the spectrum; permanent death is the default, enemy encounters are designed with real teeth, and many classes reward knowledge accumulated over failed attempts.
- Large roster of races and classes, many unlocked through gameplay achievements
- Talent trees that allow highly customized, combinable ability loadouts
- Randomly generated dungeons and tactical turn-based combat with no consumable economy
- An embedded world history that surfaces gradually through exploration and lore
- Online character sheets and stat tracking
- Workshop-supported modding tools
The game’s update history reflects years of sustained development well past its 2013 release. The 1.6.x series ran through late 2019 and into early 2020, producing multiple named patches including “Vaulted!” and “The Long Dark.” The major 1.7.0 “Necrotic Translations” update, which prominently overhauled the Necromancer class, went through an extended public beta from July through October 2020 before its full release. Point releases continued into 2021 with “Creepy Crawlies” and “Wandering Star,” and 1.7.5 “Before the Storm” and 1.7.6 “Woops” followed in 2023. As of 2023, a further DLC under the working title Lost Land was confirmed to be in development.
