Every sector, planet, cave, and encounter in Approaching Infinity is procedurally generated, meaning no two voyages through its broken galaxy unfold the same way. Developed by IBOL and released on April 29, 2025, it is a turn-based space RPG that draws explicit inspiration from classic science fiction, blending tactical combat, diplomacy, trade, crafting, mining, and open-ended exploration into a single procedurally built universe.
A run begins with character creation: players choose from ten space-themed classes, each carrying skills that alter how the game plays, then recruit up to five officers of different disciplines to fill out the crew. From there the galaxy opens completely. Fourteen major factions each have full quest lines with their own histories and outcomes, eight of which lead to distinct victories. Two additional win conditions exist to be discovered during play. Players can also ignore all of that and explore indefinitely, leveling crew and equipment without ceiling. The opening hook — tracing what happened to a human colony — is present but optional, a suggested thread rather than a mandate.
- Ten playable character classes with unique, game-altering skills
- Fourteen major factions with full quest lines; eight yield unique endings
- Hardcore and adventure modes, the latter treating death as a setback rather than a reset
- Procedurally generated sectors, planets, caves, items, and encounters
- Activities spanning diplomacy, smuggling, artifact hunting, planet surveying, and salvage
- Officer recruitment and persistent crew progression across a run
Combat is turn-based and tactical, but violence is never the only answer; diplomacy, extortion, and faction allegiance all shape how encounters resolve. Shipwrecks and star temples are flagged explicitly as lethal territory, and the game maintains real danger even as it accommodates players who want narrative depth over punishment. Both hardcore and adventure modes support 10 distinct victory conditions for those who want structured goals; adventure mode removes permadeath for those who would rather accumulate power and story indefinitely.
The update history since the April 29, 2025 launch shows sustained development. Early post-release patches addressed compatibility and added content through May and June 2025, including four new officer classes and a cryo-chamber system. Summer 2025 brought disease mechanics, cryptid hunting, and creature cages. The autumn saw a builds system, new quests, and new locations. November 2025 introduced the Shipyards DLC. A further DLC arrived in December, controller support entered beta in early 2026, and a major update followed in March 2026 ahead of the game’s one-year anniversary in April 2026.
Approaching Infinity suits players who find most space games either too combat-focused or too shallow in their simulation, and who want a single title that can function as a tactical RPG, a trading sandbox, or a lore-driven faction crawler depending on the session.
