Returnal™
Death is permanent and the planet is never the same twice: Returnal traps astronaut Selene in a loop on the alien world of Atropos, forcing her to restart every run from scratch each time she falls. Developed by Housemarque and Climax Studios, the game combines third-person shooting with dense bullet-hell encounters, asking players to read and dodge intricate projectile patterns while managing an arsenal that rebuilds itself differently every cycle.
Each run assembles a distinct loadout from procedurally distributed weapons, parasites, and consumables. Items carry trade-offs — a parasite might boost damage while imposing a punishing drawback — so the build that emerges from any given loop shapes how combat plays out rather than steering toward a fixed optimal path. Environments across Atropos shift layout between runs, ensuring that positional knowledge from a previous death never fully transfers. The Tower of Sisyphus, an endless ascending challenge mode, was included in the PC release from day one and adds a score-attack dimension on top of the main campaign.
- Bullet-hell third-person combat with fully 3D dodge mechanics
- Procedural item distribution with parasite trade-off system
- Two-player online co-op mode
- Tower of Sisyphus endless mode included at launch
- Suspend Cycle feature allowing a run to be paused and resumed
- PC-specific enhancements: ultrawide and super-ultrawide support, ray-traced reflections and shadows, DLSS, AMD FSR, and five graphical presets
The PC version released on February 15, 2023, arriving with a launch-day stream and a patch just two days later. Further patches followed in March and twice in April 2023, addressing stability and performance in the weeks after release. The update cadence through that window suggests an active post-launch refinement period rather than a prolonged early access arc — the game shipped complete and was polished in response to player feedback.
Returnal rewards players who are comfortable reconstructing their approach after total failure and who find bullet-pattern literacy satisfying as a skill in its own right; those looking for incremental carryover between runs will find the game’s all-or-nothing structure its defining challenge.
