Spirits Abyss

Destructible terrain shapes every descent in Spirits Abyss, a roguelite action-platformer by caiys in which a child cast into a mountainous abyss under a blood moon must fight their way back out — or discover what lies past the veil of death. The environment can be broken apart, and that malleability feeds into both combat and exploration across randomly generated layouts.

Players choose from nine clans, two available at the start and seven unlocked through play, each bringing a distinct weapon, fighting style, and upgrade path. Runs pass through up to fifteen regions — ten of them unlocked over time — each with its own enemy set, hazards, and oddities, supplemented by special rooms and sub-stages that keep the layout from settling into routine. Over a hundred items range from passive stat boosts to equippable weapons and strange artifacts. Death is not simply a reset; the game poses a persistent question about what exists beyond the Undying Gate.

Caiys released Spirits Abyss on August 27, 2020, with version 12 already in place and version 13 — titled Sullen Satiation — arriving in the same month. The substantial v14 update, Accursed Nightmares, landed in August 2021 and was followed by a long tail of patches through early 2022. Version 15, called Hubby Maintenance, arrived in September 2023 and was refined through a dense run of point releases extending into early 2024.

The breadth of modes and clan variety gives the game staying power for players who exhaust a single ruleset quickly and want structured reasons to return rather than raw difficulty alone.
