Pigment Fuels the Fight
Purgatory bleeds Pigment, and Bosch has granted you the ability to control it. This strange substance is what powers your party’s most devastating and absurd abilities in combat, and learning how to channel it well is central to surviving each encounter. Pigment comes in many colours, and each colour is drawn from a different source. Some is pulled from the enemies you defeat, and some is drawn from your own flesh, making every ability a small sacrifice as much as a weapon.
Managing your Pigment alongside your party’s health and resources means every turn is a balancing act. Spend too freely and you’ll find yourself without the tools to survive a difficult encounter. Hold back too cautiously and you may never build the momentum needed to turn a fight in your favour. It’s this tension between risk and restraint that gives Brutal Orchestra’s combat its tactical depth.
Fools, Not Heroes
This is a place of the dead, but even here, poor Fools are eking out a pathetic existence. Some of them make for valuable party members, bringing genuine strength and useful abilities to your cause, while others offer little more than entertaining conversation along the way. Most, however, are dim witted or damaged beyond all reason, and telling the difference before you commit to travelling with them is part of the challenge.
Building a party out of Purgatory’s misfits means learning what each Fool brings to a fight, then equipping them with the Treasure you uncover as you go. No two parties will look quite the same, and the combination of Fools you choose to rely on will shape how you approach every encounter that follows.
Treasure From a Twisted World
Purgatory is not a gentle place. It’s a writhing dump of all that has died across many worlds, and travelling through it means facing endless deserts of pale sand stalked by parasitic fish, storm cloaked mountain tops hiding ungodly things above and below, and eventually the Garden waiting at the end of time. Scattered throughout this world are over 100 powerful artifacts, many of them plucked directly from Hieronymus Bosch’s own artworks, and finding them dramatically shapes how each run plays out.
How Long Does a Run Take?
A typical run in Brutal Orchestra usually takes about 45 minutes to 1.5 hours to complete, depending on your familiarity with the game’s tactical combat and your build. Newer players often lean toward the 1.5 to 2 hour mark while reading enemy abilities and working out their party’s Pigment combos, while experienced players can generally clear a normal or hard mode run in 45 minutes to an hour once they’ve learned the fights. Highly optimized, aggressive speedruns can finish a hard mode run in roughly 20 to 35 minutes.
