Deflector, developed by Arrowfist Games, drops the player into a microscopic biological world overrun by hostile viral organisms, then hands them the ability to send enemy projectiles straight back at their source. That deflection mechanic is the mechanical spine of every run: reading bullet patterns, timing the return, and stacking it with character-specific weapons to tear through increasingly dense waves of enemies.
At the start of a run the player selects a Bioshell, each of which carries a distinct weapon loadout, deflection method, and active ability. The default Eradicator uses a boomerang; additional Bioshells unlock by accumulating experience across runs. Combat takes place across multiple worlds, each populated with its own enemy fauna that attack through both direct contact and projectile volleys, culminating in an Apex Virus boss. Difficulty is steep and intentional — enemy projectile density reaches bullet-hell density, and even the smallest enemies are designed to punish inattention. Between runs, a hub fills out with research modules that open new Mutations and persistent upgrades, expanding the build space available in future attempts. Within a run, Mutations layer onto the Bioshell’s base kit, shaping how deflection and weapons interact.
- Several Bioshells with distinct weapons, deflection styles, and abilities
- Projectile deflection as a primary offensive and defensive tool
- Persistent hub upgrades and unlockable Mutations across runs
- Distinct enemy types per world, each with unique attack patterns
- Apex Virus boss encounter closing each world
- Apex Rush mode for an elevated endgame challenge
Deflector launched on March 24, 2023. A summer major update followed in June 2023, and July brought new virus strain variants and enemy evolutions alongside the game’s soundtrack release for streaming. An Apex Rush mode — a high-difficulty challenge layer — arrived in November 2023 alongside version 1.2.0.3 patch notes. Console versions for Xbox and Nintendo Switch released in September 2023. The game was exhibited at WePlay Expo 2023 and participated in SHMUP Fest, and was named a finalist in the GDWC 2023 awards announced in early 2024.
