That chess piece has been giving you trouble for three turns. You’ve got just enough health to survive another hit, and all you need is one decent attack roll to send it packing. You throw your dice, watch them tumble across the battlefield, and wait for your glorious victory.
Defense. Defense. Another defense. Oh, come on! You’re trying to win a fight here, not build a pillow fort!
Welcome to Die Meeple, a hand-drawn dice-building roguelite from Kulin Studio and cestphoque that’s taking part in October’s Steam Next Fest. Its free demo lets you battle an uprising of living board-game pieces, build a collection of increasingly powerful dice, and discover why those little wooden figures might have been better left inside their boxes.
The Pieces Have Declared War!

It seems the contents of your board-game cupboard have finally had enough. In Die Meeple, familiar game pieces have come to life and rebelled, turning their forgotten boards into dangerous territory. Chess pieces are no longer content to sit quietly waiting for their next move, and you’ll need more than a good opening strategy to survive.
You’ll choose a hero, grab your dice bag, and venture into a hand-drawn world where every expedition follows a procedurally generated map. Different routes lead to battles, treasure, merchants, campfires, and elite enemies that could put an abrupt end to your adventure.
You might spot a tempting reward along one path, only to realize there’s a nasty opponent standing between you and the prize. Do you take the risk or head somewhere safer? Considering your enemies are literally board-game pieces, you’d think they’d at least have the decency to wait their turn.
Roll First, Panic Later
Battles are turn-based, with your actions determined by the dice you bring into combat. Each die has its own collection of faces, providing attacks, defense, critical hits, and special effects. Roll your dice, examine the results, and figure out how to make the most of whatever you’ve been given. That last part can get tricky.
Imagine facing two enemies. One is preparing to land a nasty blow, while the other is almost defeated. You’ve rolled enough damage to eliminate the weaker opponent, but doing so means leaving yourself exposed. Perhaps it’s better to defend, survive another turn, and hope your next roll gives you something useful. Or perhaps you’ll gamble on an aggressive attack and discover that your dice have a very different plan.
You’ll be able to see enemy intentions, so there’s room to plan ahead rather than simply throwing everything at the nearest target. Of course, even the cleverest strategy can fall apart when the dice refuse to produce the one result you desperately need.
These Dice Have Some Serious Attitude

The good news is that your dice collection doesn’t have to stay the same. As you explore, you’ll find opportunities to acquire new dice, upgrade existing ones, and experiment with combinations that suit your preferred approach.
Fancy going on the offensive? Build a collection capable of delivering heavy attacks and critical hits. Prefer surviving long enough to see another turn? Defensive dice could help keep your hero standing when the enemy starts getting ambitious. Buffs, debuffs, and special effects give you more ways to influence a battle, while relics introduce additional abilities that can change how your collection performs.
The fun comes from discovering which effects work together. You could assemble a collection that deals enormous damage, only to realize you’ve left yourself with very few ways to defend against a powerful enemy. Then again, filling your bag with defensive dice isn’t going to help much if you can’t actually defeat anything. Finding that balance is part of the challenge.
Choose Your Route and Regret Your Decisions
Winning battles is only half the adventure. You’ll also need to decide where to go next. The procedurally generated map offers different routes, each with its own rewards and potential problems. You could visit a merchant to improve your dice collection, stop at a campfire to prepare for upcoming battles, or head toward an elite encounter in the hope of securing something valuable.
The trouble is knowing when you’re ready. A risky fight might reward you with exactly what your build needs, but it could also leave your hero in pieces before you’ve had a chance to use it. With different heroes, dice combinations, and routes to experiment with, each new attempt gives you another opportunity to approach the rebellion differently.
Especially the chess pieces.
They’ve clearly been holding a grudge.y the chess pieces. They’ve clearly been holding a grudge.
