A solo developer has released a playable demo for Skyrest, a first-person action roguelite built over the course of 14 months, now available during Steam Next Fest. The game frames its combat and exploration around a narrative conceit. You are a deceased person standing at the gates of the afterlife, tasked with resolving inner conflicts before reaching eternal rest.
In Skyrest, you summon procedurally generated islands from your boat, which serves as both home base and crafting hub. The gameplay loop chains resource gathering, weapon creation, and fast-paced first-person combat against ghostly enemies across four distinct biomes. Each island offers unique enemy types, traps, and level design, while you unlock the ability to summon specific biomes on subsequent runs. Combat pairs melee and ranged spiritual weapons with runic attacks, supplemented by temporary consumables crafted from gathered resources.
Progression splits into two tracks. Run-to-run variety comes through procedural generation, unique events, and choices between Ascensions and Amulets. Long-term advancement centers on the boat itself: constructing new structures unlocks expanded crafting capabilities, letting you build and store items between expeditions. The developer has targeted a release window of December 2026 or January 2027, acknowledging competition from larger releases during the holiday season.
Whether Skyrest ultimately stands out will depend on how successfully it combines its spiritual themes with the replayability roguelite players expect. The demo is available now, giving players an early chance to see whether its unusual approach to combat and progression can carve out a place in an increasingly crowded genre.
