Serious Sam: Shatterverse Is Out Now, With the Whole Multiverse in Tow

Serious Sam: Shatterverse has spent five months teasing its strangest reinvention yet, a roguelite built around throwing infinite alternate versions of Sam at the exact same war. Now, we finally know when that war actually starts.

Developed by Behaviour Interactive and published by Devolver Digital, the co-op roguelite first-person shooter launches today on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. It brings five playable Sams, a fully cooperative run structure for up to five players, and Mental’s usual disregard for reality along for the ride.

There’s already been plenty of time to see it coming, too. Shatterverse was first revealed back in March at the Xbox Partner Preview, timed to the Serious Sam series’ 25th anniversary, and a public Steam playtest opened its doors in June to give players an early look at the co-op chaos months before release.

Why Fight One War When You Can Fight It Five Times?

As the multiverse framing suggests, Shatterverse doesn’t expect one Sam to handle Mental alone. Instead, reality has fractured, and Serious Sams from countless timelines have all discovered they’re fighting the same skeletal menace across shifting dimensions.

Players enlist in the Serious Program and get dropped into procedurally shifting arenas built around hand-crafted setpieces, tracking down five of Mental’s lieutenants before he can be confronted directly. Classic Serious Sam monsters return for the hunt, joined by new creatures conjured up specifically for the occasion, all built to swarm players in the sort of numbers the series has built its reputation on.

Two Systems, One Very Long Run

Each expedition into Mental’s fractured dimensions splits into two layers that build on each other. Runs are powered by boons, stacking pickups found mid-fight that combine into increasingly deranged builds, alongside modifiers chosen going in that can reshape an entire session, from enemy density to arena hazards.

Permanent progression takes over once a run ends, however it ends. Upgrades unlocked between attempts carry forward regardless of how badly the last one went, so even a Sam who gets overrun in the first five minutes leaves something behind for the next one to build on.

The arsenal backing all this blends returning series weapons with new experimental options designed specifically around the run-based format, giving each fresh attempt its own reason to feel different from the last.

Out Today, Across Every Platform at Once

Shatterverse launches day one with cross-platform multiplayer, Steam achievements, and cloud saves built in, so a five-Sam squad spread across consoles has no excuse not to show up together. That matters more here than usual, since the appeal rests almost entirely on coordinating that many players through the same run, each juggling their own boons, modifiers, and loadout choices as the arena fills up around them.

Both systems, and every Sam pulled in to test them, are pointed at the same five lieutenants standing between the Serious Program and Mental himself. Whether five timelines’ worth of firepower is actually enough remains to be seen.
