Rogue Discovery: Rogue Monster Rush Puts an Army of Adorable Monsters Between Your Base and a Robot Invasion

Your peaceful little island has developed a serious robot problem. Mechanical invaders are marching toward your base and your best line of defense is a collection of colorful monsters you’ve been hatching from eggs. Some are capable of unleashing devastating attacks, others have useful abilities that can turn a battle around, and all of them are about to earn their keep.

Rogue Monster Rush is a creature-collecting tower defense roguelike from two-person studio Ghost Vibes LLC that combines monster training, strategic placement, and hands-on combat. You’ll hatch new defenders, build winding routes for invading robots, and strengthen your team between runs, all while personally helping your monsters deal with anything that gets too close.

Your Monsters Have One Job, and It’s Not Looking Cute

At the heart of Rogue Monster Rush is a team of collectible monsters that serve as your defensive towers. Each creature comes with its own attacks and abilities, giving you plenty to consider when deciding which monsters deserve a place in your party.

Before heading into battle, you’ll assemble your loadout and choose a leader whose special ability provides an additional advantage. Once the fighting begins, positioning becomes just as important as the creatures themselves. Placing a powerful monster somewhere that barely sees any enemies isn’t going to accomplish much, regardless of how impressive its attacks might be.

You’ll also need to decide which creatures to evolve during a run, spending gold to unlock substantial stat increases and additional abilities. That makes every upgrade a choice between strengthening the defenses you’ve already established and saving resources for whatever the next wave throws at you.

You’re Building the Road to Your Own Destruction

One of the game’s more unusual mechanics involves constructing the very path your enemies will use to attack you. Rather than defending a fixed route, you’ll select from randomly offered tiles to build out the battlefield as each run progresses. That gives you some control over how the robotic invaders approach your base, allowing you to create routes that work with your monster placements.

A longer, winding path could give your defenders more opportunities to attack, while a poorly planned layout might leave dangerous gaps in your coverage. Of course, you’re working with randomly selected tiles, so you can’t always build exactly what you want. You’ll need to adapt your strategy around the pieces available, the monsters in your party, and the growing threat heading toward your base.

It’s a clever addition that makes the battlefield itself part of your build rather than something you simply react to.

Sometimes You Have to Do the Fighting Yourself

Your monsters may be responsible for defending the island, but you’re not expected to sit back and watch them do everything. Rogue Monster Rush includes player-controlled abilities that can be unleashed during combat, giving you another way to influence the outcome of a battle. These abilities can help you deal with dangerous enemies, support struggling defenses, or rescue a situation that’s rapidly getting out of hand.

Between waves, you’ll also encounter opportunities to strengthen your team through upgrades and Monster Boosters, which provide randomly rolled stat improvements for entire monster species. There’s even an in-game shop run by a hermit crab named Penny Pincher.

Hatch, Upgrade, and Start All Over Again

The creature-collecting side of Rogue Monster Rush extends well beyond individual runs. Back at your base, the Hatchery allows you to collect new monsters from eggs, gradually expanding the selection of defenders available for future attempts. You’ll also unlock permanent upgrades that improve your creatures, base, and player abilities, making each expedition an opportunity to strengthen your overall defenses.

Individual monsters have Leader, Attack, and Evolution skills that can be improved through progression. For players who really want to invest in their favorites, there’s a Prestige system that resets a monster’s upgrades in exchange for permanent improvements to those skills.

The game’s full release also introduced additional monsters, new areas, more bosses, and challenge rifts, providing plenty of reasons to keep experimenting with different teams.

Rogue Monster Rush entered Early Access in February 2025 before reaching its full 1.0 release on March 7, 2026. It’s available now on Steam for PC. With its combination of collectible monsters, randomized path building, active abilities, and permanent progression, it offers a satisfying amount of control over how each defensive strategy develops.
