Most turn-based strategy games withhold enemy intentions and reward players who can tolerate uncertainty. Into the Breach, released February 27, 2018 by Subset Games, refuses that premise entirely. Every enemy attack is shown in advance, every threatened tile marked before the player commits to a move. The challenge is never informational — it is geometric. Can you reposition, push, or redirect three mechs to neutralize four threats in a single turn without destroying the civilian buildings that keep your machines powered?

Each run drops the player onto one of several Corporate-Nation islands, assigning a squad of three mechs to repel Vek, enormous subterranean creatures that emerge to attack settlements. Runs are structured as a series of discrete missions across islands, each offering branching choices that affect resources and reputation. Reputation with surviving nations funds upgrades between missions, and the power grid — drawn directly from intact civilian buildings — sets a hard ceiling on what the squad can field. Lose too many buildings and the run collapses. The pressure is constant and spatial rather than statistical.

Pilots level up and accumulate skills, and when a run ends in failure, a single experienced pilot can be sent back through time to seed the next attempt with one carried-over advantage. Mechs and weapons are found and swapped within a run, but squads are chosen at the start and define the tactical vocabulary available throughout. Different squads push, pull, freeze, or set terrain on fire, and their interactions with enemy bodies — which can be used as projectile shields or shoved into each other — give the game most of its combinatorial depth.

After launch, Subset Games added Mac support in August 2018 and controller support later that November. A substantial patch arrived in April 2020. The game’s largest expansion, the free Advanced Edition, was announced in June 2022 and released in July of that year, adding five new mech squads, nearly forty weapons, four pilots with an expanded skill system, additional enemy types and bosses, new mission objectives, and an Unfair difficulty tier aimed at players who had exhausted the existing challenge. Small patches followed through early 2023 to address issues introduced by the update.

Where FTL, Subset Games’ earlier work, asks players to manage probability and react to surprises, Into the Breach asks them to solve a visible puzzle under resource pressure with no hidden variables — a design closer to chess than to traditional roguelikes.
