You’re a Living Spark, trapped inside fragile wooden vessels that splinter, collapse, and catch fire without warning. When your body breaks apart, death isn’t the end, it’s just a change of scenery, and finding a new host before you fade out completely becomes the only way to survive.

GRAIN ROT is a horror co-op extraction builder from developer Beck & Branch Games. Riding a cursed elevator into shifting, procedurally generated ruins with your crew, you’ll smash furniture for resources, dodge unpredictable Corrupted vessels, and haul everything you can carry back to rebuild an Outpost capable of surviving even deeper descents.

What Makes It Different?

  • Possess and swap between fragile wooden vessels that can shatter at any moment
  • Explore procedurally shifting underground ruins alongside your crew
  • Smash furniture for resources or feed it into the Grinder for gold
  • Face Corrupted vessels that react unpredictably to sound and movement
  • Rebuild a persistent Outpost with new furniture, upgrades, and rescued survivors
  • Guide your team as a wandering Spark after your vessel finally breaks
  • Rescue survivors trapped deep within the ruins’ Deep Layers

Death Just Means Finding a New Body

Losing a vessel in GRAIN ROT doesn’t end a run outright. Escaping as a Living Spark, you can still guide your team through the dark in search of another host to possess, each one offering a fresh set of abilities to work with. That constant scramble to find a new vessel before fading out entirely keeps tension high even after things go badly wrong, and if the whole crew breaks at once, all the loot gathered that run is lost for good.

Every Second in the Ruins Counts

How long an expedition lasts comes down to how a team plays it. Rushing straight for valuables and heading for the elevator keeps runs short, while taking time to explore deeper floors or break apart furniture for extra scrap stretches things out considerably. Accumulating Rot from the environment or enemies slows movement speed too, dragging out the time it takes to navigate the ruins and make it back out.

How Long Does a Run Take?

The average run length or expedition typically lasts between 10 to 25 minutes. This heavily depends on the group’s speed in gathering resources, how deep they descend into the shifting ruins, and whether they’re rushing to extract or sticking around to smash furniture for scrap.

Runs tend to stay under 15 minutes when a team rushes to grab valuables and heads straight for the elevator, while exploring deeper floors or breaking apart outpost furniture for extra scrap can push runs over 20 minutes. Even if a wooden vessel breaks, the run doesn’t immediately end, since continuing as a Spark searching for a new vessel to possess can add several more minutes to the total mission time.

Controller Support

GRAIN ROT features Full Controller Support for Xbox Controllers.

Good If You Like…

If you enjoyed Cthulhu’s Reach: Devil Reef, Curse of the Dead Gods, or Children of Morta, GRAIN ROT’s mix of co-op horror and extraction-driven roguelite structure should be well worth diving into. Its possession-based vessel system gives it a genuinely different twist on the usual formula.
