Evil Empire and Konami are Making a New Castlevania Game

If you’ve been out of the loop for a bit, you definitely need to know that Evil Empire, the studio that spent years breathing life into Dead Cells, just dropped a neutron bomb, as they’re developing a brand new Castlevania game in partnership with Konami. Yes, that’s really happening.

If you’ve been following the roguelike space, you know Dead Cells practically built itself on Castlevania’s foundation. The Return to Castlevania DLC wasn’t just fan service, it was a love letter to the franchise that shaped an entire game’s DNA. Now Evil Empire is taking that reverence and building something entirely new within the Castlevania universe.

The studio claims they’ve been working on this project behind the scenes for years, pouring significant resources into what they’re calling a legendary franchise revival. That’s either bold confidence or they genuinely have something worth the hype. Given Evil Empire’s track record with Dead Cells, it’s hard to bet against them.

This is substantial news for the roguelike community. We’re talking about one of the most respected teams in the space getting the keys to an iconic IP that defined action-adventure games. Whether they’ll apply Dead Cells‘ formula to Castlevania or forge an entirely new path remains to be seen, but the pedigree here is undeniable.

The announcement is still fresh, with limited details released. You can check out the full announcement on the Dead Cells Steam page for any additional information Konami and Evil Empire choose to share.

For a franchise that’s been dormant (or worse, dormant and mishandled), this partnership feels like it might actually matter. Let’s hope Evil Empire brings the same care and craft that made Dead Cells a masterpiece.
