Every journey in Stoneshard feels like a calculated risk. Leaving the safety of town means venturing into a harsh open world where a single bad decision can end hours of progress, forcing you to think carefully about every fight, every injury, and every contract you decide to accept. Survival isn’t about rushing toward the next objective, it’s about knowing when to press on and when it’s time to turn back.

Stoneshard is an open-world turn-based RPG with roguelike elements, where you play as a medieval mercenary carving out a living in the war-torn kingdom of Aldor. You’ll travel between settlements, take on dangerous contracts, explore procedurally generated dungeons, and develop your character through a flexible skill system with no fixed classes. Every expedition is shaped by meaningful choices, resource management, and a combat system where preparation is often just as important as the battle itself.

What Makes It Different?

  • Explore a large open world filled with towns, roads, and dangerous wilderness
  • Take on contracts and choose which jobs are worth the risk
  • Venture into procedurally generated dungeons for valuable rewards
  • Build your character without traditional class restrictions
  • Manage injuries, hunger, pain, diseases, and mental state
  • Plan every battle using deep turn-based tactical combat
  • Optional permadeath creates an even greater survival challenge

Every Fight Has Consequences

Combat rewards patience far more than reckless aggression. Every weapon has its own strengths, positioning matters, and even a victorious battle can leave lasting injuries that affect the rest of your journey. Healing isn’t instant, making every encounter something to consider carefully before committing.

That slower, more methodical pace gives each victory real weight. Surviving a difficult contract feels rewarding because success depends on planning ahead rather than simply overpowering your opponents.

A World That Doesn’t Wait for You

The world of Stoneshard encourages exploration, but it rarely guarantees safety. Leaving town means preparing supplies, choosing which contracts to accept, and deciding how much risk you’re willing to take before heading into the wilderness.

With no fixed character classes, your mercenary gradually develops according to the skills and equipment you choose. That flexibility makes every character feel different, encouraging new builds and fresh approaches across multiple playthroughs.

Built for the Long Haul

Unlike many roguelites that focus on shorter runs, Stoneshard is designed around long-term adventures. Your character steadily grows stronger as you complete contracts, improve your equipment, and uncover more of Aldor’s sprawling world.

Even so, the ever-present danger never completely disappears. Whether you’re playing normally or enabling permadeath, every expedition carries enough risk to make each successful return to town feel like an achievement.

How Long Does a Run Take?

A typical playthrough of Stoneshard lasts 20 to 80 hours, although new players may lose characters much earlier while learning the game’s systems. Focusing on the main story generally takes around 20 to 30 hours, while exploring the world, completing side contracts, and tackling optional challenges can easily push a character beyond 80 hours.

Controller Support

There is currently no official controller support information available for Stoneshard.

Good If You Like…

If you enjoyed Caves of Qud, Jupiter Hell, Tales of Maj’Eyal, and Dungeonmans, Stoneshard offers a similarly unforgiving blend of tactical combat, character building, meaningful exploration, and high-stakes roguelike progression.
