Survival looks very different when you’re the infection instead of the cure. Every run is a journey through living organisms, where expanding your virus means adapting to increasingly dangerous immune defenses, scavenging biological parts, and evolving quickly enough to stay alive as the host fights back.
Pathogenic is a cellular shooter roguelike that takes place inside procedurally generated bodies. As you explore branching environments, you’ll discover new upgrades and mutations that shape how your virus grows, encouraging you to experiment with different combinations while overcoming the increasingly complex immune systems standing in your way.
What Makes It Different?
- Explore procedurally generated host bodies
- Play as an evolving virus instead of a traditional hero
- Discover biological parts and mutations throughout each run
- Build different combinations to suit your playstyle
- Battle increasingly dangerous immune cells
- Adapt your strategy as each host presents new challenges
- Experiment with a wide variety of evolving builds
Evolution Never Really Stops
The deeper you venture into a host, the more opportunities you’ll find to strengthen your virus. New biological parts and mutations steadily reshape your build, making every decision feel like another step in your evolution rather than a simple stat increase.
The strongest runs usually come from staying flexible. Focusing too heavily on a single approach can leave you vulnerable later on, encouraging you to build a virus capable of handling whatever the immune system throws at you.
Every Host Feels Different
Procedurally generated environments ensure each journey unfolds a little differently. New layouts, upgrade opportunities, and enemy encounters keep you adapting instead of relying on the same route every time.
That unpredictability gives every run its own identity. Even after learning the fundamentals, there’s always the feeling that the next host will demand a different approach.
Built for Longer Sessions
This is the kind of roguelike that rewards patience. Taking the time to explore and develop your build often pays off later, as stronger mutations and better-balanced combinations make the tougher areas much more manageable.
At the same time, there’s plenty of room to improve your efficiency. As your understanding of the game’s systems grows, you’ll naturally find faster routes and stronger ways to develop your virus from the very beginning.
How Long Does a Run Take?
A typical run in Pathogenic lasts around 20 to30 minutes, though exploring more thoroughly for biological parts and upgrades can extend that further. Players focused purely on speed have completed runs much faster, but most playthroughs reward taking the time to evolve a well-rounded build.
Controller Support
Pathogenic offers full controller support for Xbox and PlayStation controllers.
Good If You Like…
If you enjoyed Nova Drift, Atomicrops, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, and Star of Providence, Pathogenic offers a similarly rewarding mix of roguelike progression, build experimentation, and adapting to unpredictable runs where every upgrade can change the way you play.
