Emberward
Emberward is a roguelite tower defense game built around creating mazes with tetromino-shaped block cards. Before each battle begins, you arrange a limited number of wall pieces to control the route enemies will take, then position towers around the paths you have created. Every block can either stretch the journey towards your base or open up a better place for a powerful defense, so the layout becomes part puzzle and part preparation for the wave ahead.
The pieces available to you change from run to run, along with the maps, tower combinations, and mazes you will need to work around. You choose a character and flame before beginning the adventure, then collect new towers, block cards, relics, runes, enhancements, and talents as the run develops. The result is a tower defence game where your build depends as much on how you shape the battlefield as the weapons you place on it.
What Makes It Different?
- Build enemy routes using tetromino-shaped block cards before each battle
- Decide whether limited wall pieces should lengthen the path or create stronger tower positions
- Add runes to block cards to improve nearby towers, give blocks special abilities, or double their size
- Plan around towers with footprints including 1×3, 2×2, and 3×3
- Use unusual tower types such as poison towers, tracking drone towers, and luck-based D20 towers
- Choose between seven unlockable characters and five flame types
- Build runs using 45 towers, 78 relics, and a variety of block cards, runes, and enhancements
- Explore four regions in Roguelite Mode across three difficulty levels
- Increase the challenge further through the Infernal Shard system
- Play the available Endless Mode test map, Misty Graveyard
Make the Monsters Take the Long Way
The maze is never something you can treat as finished after placing a few walls. Each block has a fixed shape, and the limited supply means every placement affects what remains possible elsewhere on the map. Extending one route may give your towers more time to attack, but it could also occupy the space needed for a larger structure later in the battle.
Tower size makes those early decisions even more important. A 1×3 tower can fit into a narrow strip, while 2×2 and 3×3 structures demand much more room. Building around those footprints means leaving useful spaces open before you necessarily know which towers or upgrades the run will provide.
Runes can reshape the value of the blocks already in your hand. Some strengthen towers, others give the blocks additional abilities, and certain runes can double a block’s size. A simple wall card can therefore become part of a much larger plan, either reinforcing a valuable position or changing how much of the battlefield you can control.
A Tower for Every Kind of Plan
Emberward’s towers are not limited to familiar projectiles aimed down a fixed lane. Poison towers can span enemy paths and pour poison directly onto anything moving underneath them. Drone towers leave their position to track enemies, while D20 towers roll for damage, with higher numbers producing stronger attacks. These differences create builds that behave very differently depending on which towers appear during the journey.
Battles also award experience that can be spent on talents during the run. Alongside the towers, relics, block cards, runes, and enhancements you collect, those talents help determine whether your defense focuses on a particular tower type or develops into something broader. With different maps, tower compositions, and maze layouts appearing in each attempt, Emberward keeps asking you to create a workable defence from whatever pieces arrive next.
Good If You Like…
Players who enjoy Rogue Tower, Isle of Arrows, Tower Tactics: Liberation, or Nordhold should find plenty to enjoy in Emberward’s maze construction, randomized builds, and tower defense strategy.
