Most deckbuilding roguelikes stack cards on a flat battlefield and call it a day. Monster Train 2, developed by Shiny Shoe and released May 21, 2025, refuses that horizontal convention entirely, forcing players to distribute units and spells across three vertical train floors simultaneously—each floor a separate combat zone that enemies advance through in sequence toward the Pyre at the bottom. Defending that Pyre is the throughline of every run, and the geometry of the train is what makes the game’s decisions genuinely different from its peers.

The sequel replaces the original’s clans with five new factions, each built around distinct mechanical identities, and players combine two clans per run to generate hybrid strategies. The card pool now includes two new card types alongside the familiar unit and spell categories: Room Cards, which install persistent bonuses directly onto train floors, and Equipment Cards, which attach to individual units and modify their stats or behaviors. This layered customization means the same clan pairing can produce radically different builds across runs depending on what the card draft offers.

Outside of combat, runs connect through the Covenant Outpost, a between-run hub that gates access to story content and structural features alike. Pyre Hearts are unlockable modifiers that alter run parameters before departure and simultaneously advance the game’s narrative. The Logbook tracks completion goals, enemy data, and collection objectives, and connects to friend-facing leaderboards. Daily Challenges present heavily mutated runs scored on a competitive global and friends-list ranking. Dimensional Challenges offer handcrafted scenarios with their own mutator sets and cosmetic rewards. An endless-style mode tests escalating difficulty for players who want to push past the standard run structure.

The game’s update history shows meaningful post-launch expansion. A Mac release arrived in December 2025 alongside the Echoes from the Void patch. The major content update Destiny of the Railforged launched in February 2026, bringing the Wurmkin clan and receiving a dedicated deep-dive post, multiple hotfixes, a patch 2.1, and a follow-up patch 2.2 in March 2026 with a further 2.2.1 in April. The game reached its first anniversary in May 2026 with a week of community challenges, marking a consistent year of active development from Shiny Shoe.

Players who found Slay the Spire’s single-lane simplicity too abstracted from spatial thinking will find Monster Train 2’s floor-by-floor threat management a structural answer to that absence.
