FORWARD: Escape the Fold – Ultimate Edition

FORWARD: Escape the Fold Ultimate Edition, developed by Two Tiny Dice (solo developer Christophe Coyard), is a card-based dungeon crawler set in a mysterious underworld called the Fold. Every step of a run is driven by a single decision: choose one of three face-up cards to advance, each card representing an enemy encounter, chest, market, item, or hazard. That one-input structure keeps turns immediate and eliminates interface friction, but the consequences of each pick accumulate fast—a poor sequence of choices can end a run without warning.

Runs are built around seven unlockable champions, each with distinct powers that meaningfully reshape strategy rather than tweaking numbers at the margin. Over the course of an ascent, players collect and combine items drawn from a pool of more than a hundred cards, found in chests and markets or awarded at dungeon endpoints. Cursed items appear alongside beneficial ones, adding a risk-assessment layer to every acquisition. The game sits toward the unforgiving end of the casual-strategy spectrum: the card-flip structure looks approachable, but the dungeon does not slow down or telegraph danger, and champions must be understood deeply before consistent progress becomes likely. Leaderboards track top performers.

The game originated as a 2019 game jam prototype. Coyard developed it into the Ultimate Edition, which released on Steam on March 29, 2022. The weeks immediately after launch brought balancing patches and a first content update; Update 1.1.1 in April 2022 added new items and challenges, and Update 1.2.0 arrived in October 2022 as the named Ultimate Edition release on the platform. A mobile version of Forward followed in February 2023. By mid-2023 Two Tiny Dice had shifted focus to a new project called Pyrene, whose demo launched in January 2024 and whose free keys were distributed in December 2025, marking FORWARD as a completed, self-contained release rather than an actively updated one.
