You are three heroes deep in Fahrul’s wilderness when nightfall hits and you must choose: pitch camp and rest, or keep moving and risk ambushes that could cripple your party before the next town. That choice — safety versus momentum — sits at the heart of For The King, a turn-based strategy RPG developed by IronOak Games and released on April 19, 2018.
Each run begins on a procedurally generated world map divided into hex tiles. A party of up to three characters moves across it in turns, triggering quests, random events, loot drops, and encounters that differ every time. Combat operates through a slot-based system where each attack or ability is resolved across a series of randomised hit-chance windows — land enough slots and the action succeeds fully; miss them and it partially fails or misfires entirely. Herbs gathered in the field fuel a pipe that restores health and cures status ailments, making resource collection a constant pressure rather than an afterthought. Characters can split apart to cover the map faster, but fighting alone is far more dangerous, so positioning the party is a live tactical question throughout every run.
Between runs, accumulated Lore currency unlocks permanent additions to the item pool, class roster, and event table. New weapons, NPCs, and classes enter the game this way, gradually widening what each subsequent run can contain. It is an additive system rather than a power escalation: unlocks expand variety more than they reduce difficulty, which stays consistently punishing from the first run onward.
The base game shipped with the main Fahrul campaign, and expansions added substantial new content: Dungeon Crawl, Frozen Expanse, Into The Deep, and the Gold Rush un-cooperative mode, which introduces competitive tension to the co-op structure. All of that expansion content is included in the current release. The update arc through 2023 reflects a game winding toward a sequel: a free weekend in September 2023 broke player records, a five-year anniversary was celebrated in October, and For The King II launched in November 2023. Late 2023 posts, including a “new era” announcement and a final Book of Lore chapter, marked the handoff of active development focus to the sequel.
A new player’s first hour involves picking a starting class, stepping onto a fresh procedurally generated map, getting into one or two scrappy combats that immediately demonstrate how punishing a bad slot run can be, and probably losing a character before finding the first town.
