Every item picked up in Neon Abyss stacks with every other item, with no cap on how many passive effects can be active at once — and that unbounded accumulation is the engine the whole game runs on. Developed by Veewo Games and released on July 14, 2020, it is a fast-moving action platformer set in a neon-drenched underworld where the player character belongs to Grim Squad, a strike force assembled by Hades to push into the Abyss and bring down a pantheon of New Gods.

Runs are structured as descents through procedurally arranged dungeon floors, cleared through twin-stick-style shooting and platforming. Item drops are frequent and their passive effects compound freely, so a build that starts with a modest damage bonus can spiral into something barely recognizable by the final boss. Alongside items, eggs found during a run hatch into pets that carry their own abilities and grow stronger the longer the player survives. Scattered through the dungeons are mini-games — piano performances, dance competitions, meditation challenges among them — that offer loot breaks from combat. Between runs, players permanently unlock new rooms, items, bosses, rule modifiers, and alternate endings, meaning the pool of possible dungeon content expands the more the game is played.

  • Unlimited passive item stacking with no hard ceiling on synergies
  • Pets that hatch from eggs, carry unique abilities, and evolve over the course of a run
  • Dungeon evolution system that unlocks new content, rooms, and endings across runs
  • Mini-games embedded in the dungeon that reward loot for completion
  • Multiple endings tied to choices and unlocks accumulated over playtime

After release, Veewo Games delivered a steady run of numbered content updates through 2021 and into 2022, including a Halloween update, a Winter update, a Seed Machine update that added run-seeding, and a Lord of Anger content drop. The Chrono Trap DLC arrived in January 2022, and a crossover character from Muse Dash was added in August 2023. A bug-fix patch in late 2022 brought the version to 1.5.2, and a further update was issued as recently as October 2025. By late 2024 Veewo had shifted focus toward a sequel, with a first trailer revealed in December 2024 and Neon Abyss 2 entering Early Access in July 2025.

The game rewards players who enjoy watching a character’s ruleset bend and eventually break under the weight of accumulated effects — anyone comfortable with chaotic, high-velocity runs where no two item combinations play the same way will find a lot of mileage here.
