Brace Yourself Games built Crypt of the NecroDancer around a single uncompromising constraint: every action the player takes must land on the beat. Released April 23, 2015, it fuses turn-based dungeon crawling with rhythm mechanics so that movement, attacks, and enemy behavior all pulse to the soundtrack. Miss the beat and you lose your score multiplier; sustain it and combat flows like choreography.
Each run drops the player into a procedurally generated crypt where they fight skeletons, zombies, dragons, and other enemies that move and attack in patterns synchronized to the music. Combat is grid-based and tactical in the roguelike tradition, but the rhythm layer means positioning decisions must be made in fractions of a second. Diamonds collected during runs fund permanent upgrades and better equipment at the shop, giving returning players incrementally better starting options without removing the threat of a bad run. Daily challenges and leaderboards support both score-chasing and speedrunning across the full roster of fifteen playable characters, each with distinct rule sets — some restricting weapon types, some altering how the beat is tracked — that substantially change how the dungeon must be read.
Composed by Danny Baranowsky, the soundtrack spans over forty original tracks and earned its own recognition alongside the game. Players can substitute their own MP3 files, and the game parses the tempo of whatever song is loaded to set the beat window accordingly. Six full remix albums by artists including Chipzel, FamilyJules, and Virt ship with the game as additional soundtrack options. Input can come from a keyboard, controller, or USB dance pad.
Post-launch development has been extensive. The Synchrony DLC spent time in early access before leaving it in March 2024 with the v4.0.0 update, which marked the most significant structural expansion in the game’s history. A Hatsune Miku DLC followed in April 2024, and Shovel Knight was added as a playable character in October 2025. Verification for Steam Deck came in late 2023. A tenth anniversary was marked in April 2025, the same period that saw the release of the standalone successor Rift of the NecroDancer. A Supporter Upgrade was made available in December 2025. Mod support has been part of the ecosystem throughout, with official modder spotlights appearing in the update feed as recently as early 2024.
Difficulty options in any conventional sense are absent; the fifteen characters serve that function instead, with some representing extreme self-imposed challenges and others offering slightly more forgiving rule sets for players building familiarity with the beat window.
