Each run in Curse of the Dead Gods drops the player into a torch-lit temple and asks them to clear chamber after chamber of traps, enemies, and environmental hazards before reaching a boss. At the start of every corridor the player chooses a path branching toward different room types — combat arenas, treasure vaults, or shops — building a weapon loadout across three slots: main hand, off hand, and a two-handed option. Weapons span swords, spears, bows, guns, and bombs, and each run’s arsenal is assembled from whatever the temple offers, not from a fixed selection. Light matters mechanically: fighting in darkness raises a hidden-attack penalty, so carrying and placing torches is a tactical consideration rather than atmosphere alone.

The corruption system is what separates Curse of the Dead Gods from most action roguelikes. Gold spent and damage taken accumulate corruption, and when it hits a threshold the player draws a curse from a deck. Curses impose run-long conditions — some are straightforward punishments, others are double-edged, granting power alongside a liability. The Curse of the Headless, added in the April 2021 update, accelerates kill speed with a visual transformation. Players can lean into corruption deliberately to harvest stronger relics, or try to suppress it and fight cleaner runs. Neither strategy is safe. Bosses are large, scripted encounters that cap each of the temple’s three main wings, and champions — elite enemies seeded through normal rooms — serve as mid-run pressure tests. Players who prefer methodical, inventory-driven roguelikes without reflex demands will not find a comfortable fit here.

Passtech Games released Curse of the Dead Gods out of Early Access on February 23, 2021, at version 1.0. The Early Access period had been active content: the update feed shows named drops including The Path of Trials in September 2020, The Armory in October, and The Eagle’s Spire in November, each adding rooms and systems to the temple. After full release, Passtech shipped a crossover update in April 2021 — the Curse of the Dead Cells update — which added three weapons modeled on Dead Cells counterparts, a new curse, a new challenge room tied to a cursed chest, and bombs as a two-handed fighting style. Hotfixes through mid-2021 addressed platform-specific pad support, achievements, and general stability.
