Empty Shell
They said the facility had been abandoned for decades, but once the volunteers arrived, it was immediately clear something was wrong. Every one of them signed a contract for a “recovery operation” without being told much about it, and the secrets buried in this dark industrial site are a lot worse than anyone was led to expect.
EMPTY SHELL is a tense roguelite survival horror game from developer CC ARTS, played from a top-down perspective surrounded by darkness. Scavenging weapons, ammo, and gadgets, managing a limited inventory, and piecing together the facility’s history through logs and documents, you’ll step into the shoes of a new volunteer every time you die, uncovering what led to the accident that caused all of this.
What Makes It Different?
- Take control of a new volunteer every time you die, with randomized starting equipment
- Explore randomly generated maps that change every time you enter a new level or die
- Scavenge weapons, ammo, and gadgets to raise your odds of survival
- Manage a limited inventory, making room only for what you deem vital
- Face different types of enemies that hunt you through every room of the facility
- Buy upgrades and devices to help during fights
- Find logs and documents from the 1950s that reveal the stories of the people who worked there
A New Volunteer for Every Descent
Death in EMPTY SHELL isn’t a game over so much as a change of scenery. Each time a volunteer falls, a new one is sent into the facility with a different set of randomized starting equipment, and each level gets generated with a fresh layout. That keeps the dread alive from run to run, since there’s no memorizing a route or relying on a favorite loadout, and the unsettling sense of being just one more expendable test subject sits at the heart of the story. Dark corridors, cold rooms, and the constant threat of abominable creatures make every attempt feel like a fresh descent into something that’s already gone badly wrong.
Every Bullet and Every Slot Matters
Resource management is where much of the game’s tension comes from. Weapons, ammo, and gadgets are all scavenged from the facility, and the limited inventory forces tough choices about what to carry and what to leave behind, since there’s rarely room for everything. Enemies hunt you down room by room, and upgrades and devices bought along the way help tip the odds, but they only go so far when a bad decision can turn a manageable fight into a disaster. Along the way, puzzles, logs, and documents from the 1950s gradually reveal the stories of the people who worked here and the accident that led to the nightmare you’re now trapped inside, giving a genuine sense of mystery beneath the survival horror.
How Long Does a Run Take?
An average main story run takes about 4 hours, while a completionist or full-side-content playthrough takes around 9 hours according to player data. The prologue or demo runs roughly 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on skill level and difficulty. Overall, average total playtime sits around 4.8 hours, with a median of about 2.1 hours.
