The pill was supposed to help. Instead, it traps you inside your own subconscious. That’s the premise behind Blast Vein, an upcoming roguelike FPS that combines fast-paced boomer shooter combat with a descent into a shifting biomechanical nightmare.
At the center of the story is AXIOM, a fictional drug designed to eliminate human suffering by forcing patients to confront their inner selves. Naturally, things don’t go according to plan. Players find themselves navigating a distorted subconscious world where reality bends, enemies mutate, and survival is anything but guaranteed.
Visually, Blast Vein leans into stark black-and-white environments, creating a dreamlike atmosphere that feels equally unsettling and surreal. The deeper you descend, the stranger the world becomes.
Combat takes inspiration from classic shooters, rewarding movement, aggression, and precision. Early runs are focused on survival, with limited resources forcing players to make every shot count. Over time, however, the balance begins to shift. New weapons, upgrades, and abilities gradually transform players from desperate survivors into walking engines of destruction.
That growing power fantasy appears to be one of Blast Vein’s defining ideas. Rather than maintaining a constant struggle, the game embraces the transition from vulnerable outsider to overwhelming force, while continuing to throw increasingly dangerous threats into the path ahead.
For players who enjoy fast shooters, strange worlds, and roguelikes that aren’t afraid to get a little weird, Blast Vein looks determined to leave an impression. After all, entering your own subconscious was never likely to be a relaxing experience.
