Your robot is falling apart, enemy fire is coming from every direction, and there’s a very good chance you won’t survive the next few seconds. Thankfully, that heavily armed machine trying to kill you looks like it’s in much better condition. One quick transfer later, you’ve stolen its body, inherited its weapons, and left its former allies wondering why their friend has suddenly started shooting at them.
RAM: Random Access Mayhem is a fast-paced, top-down action roguelike from developer Xylem Studios and publisher Hawthorn Games. You play as a rogue artificial intelligence with no physical body of its own, jumping between enemy robots, stealing their abilities, and turning entire mechanical armies against themselves.
Your Enemies Are Your Spare Parts
The central mechanic in RAM is its body-swapping system, which allows you to take control of the very robots trying to destroy you. Every enemy is a potential new host, and switching between them is an essential part of surviving the game’s relentless combat.
Rather than sticking with one character and upgrading it throughout an entire run, you’re constantly adapting to whichever mechanical bodies are available. Each robot has its own moveset, weapons, and combat style, meaning your approach can change completely depending on who you’ve decided to hijack.
One minute, you could be using a machine suited to attacking from a distance, and the next, you’re controlling something designed for a much more aggressive approach. As your current body isn’t going to survive forever, you’ll need to keep an eye on potential replacements while dealing with whatever’s trying to kill you.
It’s an entertaining reversal of the usual enemy encounter. That dangerous robot charging toward you may be a serious threat, but it’s also an opportunity to upgrade your transportation.
Looking Cool Actually Pays the Bills

There’s another good reason to avoid simply blasting your way through every encounter. RAM rewards stylish combat with a system inspired by games like Devil May Cry and Ultrakill, except here your style points aren’t just something to brag about afterward. They’re currency.
Pulling off impressive attacks, mastering different combat techniques, and landing trick shots earns points that can be spent on upgrades during your run. Those upgrades modify the abilities of your robotic hosts, giving you more ways to experiment with different combinations and combat strategies. The better you fight, the more opportunities you have to become stronger.
That creates a dangerous incentive to take risks. You could play cautiously, avoiding unnecessary trouble and focusing on survival. Or you could attempt something spectacular, earn more currency, and potentially make the next encounter considerably easier.
Humanity Is Gone, but the Robots Are Doing Just Fine

The world of RAM takes place long after humanity has disappeared, leaving behind a collection of increasingly strange artificial intelligences. Digital pets, abandoned student projects, and even sentient memes were among the intelligent machines left behind. Over time, their mechanical societies evolved, with the strongest eventually dominating what remained of the world.
By the year 2120, one of those machines has created you. Now you’re exploring the ruins of human civilization, encountering the eccentric robotic communities that have taken its place and uncovering more about the world you’ve inherited.
The adventure unfolds across multiple procedurally generated levels, ensuring that each run offers a different arrangement of enemies and encounters. You’ll also face dangerous bosses with mechanics built around the game’s body-swapping system, forcing you to think carefully about when and where to transfer control.
While the premise sounds ridiculous, there’s an intriguing mystery beneath all that mechanical destruction. After all, if humanity has already disappeared and the robots are busy destroying one another, what’s actually going to be left when you’re finished?
RAM: Random Access Mayhem entered Early Access in November 2024 before reaching its full 1.0 release on September 15, 2025. It recently celebrated it’s one year anniversary. Its combination of frantic shooting, body-swapping combat, and style-based upgrades offers a refreshing amount of freedom in how you approach each encounter.
