Most deckbuilders ask players to build something powerful. Litany seems more interested in letting them build something completely unreasonable.
The new roguelike deckbuilder from MiniGoof and 2 Wedges, has just released its Steam demo, giving players the chance to experiment with card combinations so heavily stacked with synergies that the numbers eventually stop behaving as expected.
At the heart of the game is a simple idea. You open boosters, upgrade cards, and assemble what the developers describe as a “hyper-synergistic group.” The twist is that you’re not managing a single character. Instead, you’re building and coordinating multiple units at once, creating far more opportunities for abilities, effects, and upgrades to interact with one another.
And interact they do.
The entire pitch behind Litany revolves around pushing those combinations as far as possible. The goal isn’t simply to become stronger. It’s to create builds that feel like they shouldn’t work, only to watch them somehow function anyway.
That’s an appealing fantasy for any deckbuilder fan. After all, some of the most memorable runs in the genre are the ones where a handful of cards accidentally combine into something the developers probably never expected.
Roguelike deckbuilders aren’t exactly in short supply these days, which makes having a clear identity more important than ever. Litany appears to know exactly what it wants to be. Whether that ambition holds up across a full release remains to be seen, but for players who enjoy breaking games in creative ways, this is one worth keeping an eye on.
