Tabletop Tavern, developed by TJ, drops players into a roguelike real-time strategy campaign where every run begins with an empty roster and ends in either conquest or defeat. You recruit units, outfit them with discovered gear, and command them in live battles where formation, positioning, and terrain matter as much as raw unit count — spear walls to blunt cavalry charges, archer lines shielded from flanking, chokepoints exploited for advantage. Encounters scale from small skirmishes up to clashes involving hundreds of units simultaneously.

Six distinct factions — Vikings, Orcs, Elves, Humans, Dwarves, and others — each carry their own unit types, faction abilities, and compositional logic, so the strategic options available in any given run depend heavily on which banner you march under. Units and heroes combine into synergies that reward deliberate army-building rather than moment-to-moment improvisation. Between battles, roster management and branching decisions accumulate into a campaign arc that shifts with each attempt. The game sits toward the punishing end of the spectrum; random encounters and scaling difficulty mean runs can collapse quickly if synergies are neglected.

  • Real-time battlefield command with formation and terrain mechanics
  • Six factions with distinct unit rosters and abilities
  • Per-run gear discovery and hero unlocks
  • Random encounters that vary each campaign
  • Permanent faction and hero unlocks across runs

Tabletop Tavern released on June 11, 2026. The launch patch series through mid-June addressed hotfixes and included a melee rebalance, control changes, and a sieges rework — indicating the core combat systems were tuned actively in the weeks immediately following release. A milestone post celebrated 100,000 players during the same period. In July 2026, a dedicated Metaprogression Update arrived, formalizing the cross-run unlock structure as a named feature alongside continued patch iterations.
