The Ark is out there somewhere, but reaching it means keeping a city on wheels moving forward through a never ending army of darkness. Gather what you can, build what you need, and hold the line, because the moment the city falls, so does everyone inside it.
Monsters are Coming! is a tower survivor action rogue-lite from developer Ludogram. Playing as a persistent, multi-tasking hero, you’ll forage for wood, stone, and gold, fortify your ever-moving city with towers and defensive structures, and battle bad-ass bosses standing between you and safety, all while balancing risk against reward on the long road south.
What Makes It Different?
- Defend an ever-moving city instead of a single fixed base
- Choose from a variety of unique Town Halls to define your core strategy
- Equip towers like archery outposts, necromancer towers, and fire-breathing dragons
- Forage for wood, stone, and gold while fighting off endless monster hordes
- Explore shelters and side hordes for hidden secrets and rarer rewards
- Face Bad-Ass bosses guarding the way to the Ark
- Keep playing even after your hero falls, since only the city’s destruction ends a run
The City Never Stops Moving
Unlike a typical fixed base defense, the city in Monsters are Coming! is constantly rolling forward, and keeping it stocked and defended on the move changes how every decision gets made. Gathering wood keeps the engines burning and towers efficient, stone helps repair and rebuild what’s damaged, and gold funds the expansion of your fortress into something capable of surviving what’s further down the road. Straying from the beaten path in search of richer rewards always comes with the risk of falling behind your own city.
Your Hero Isn’t the Only Thing Keeping You Alive
Losing your hero in the field doesn’t automatically end a run, since only the city’s destruction brings things to a close. That distinction changes how fights are approached, since a fallen hero can rejoin the defense while the city itself keeps fighting on. Compasses collected at the end of each run also carry forward, making it a little easier for future cities to find their way toward the Ark.
How Long Does a Run Take?
An average, full playthrough of a run typically lasts between 25 to 45 minutes. Short, quick runs of 5 to 15 minutes can happen early on if you die quickly or are deliberately speedrunning for meta upgrade currency. Longer sessions of an hour or more usually happen when you successfully defend your city all the way to the end on higher difficulties.
Beating the main story averages roughly 5 to 5.5 hours in total, and if you’re planning a session, aiming for 45 minutes to an hour per journey should be enough to reach the end without needing to stop partway through.
Controller Support
Monsters are Coming! features Full Controller Support for Xbox Controllers and PlayStation Controllers.
Good If You Like…
Brotato and Dome Keeper both bring that same mix of survival combat and base building to the table, and Monsters are Coming! sits comfortably alongside them. Vampire Survivors is also worth a look if the horde survival side of things is what appeals most.
