Darkest Dungeon Returns From the Dead With Its First DLC in Six Years, The Fire’s Edge

Just when we thought the original Darkest Dungeon had finally been allowed to rest, Red Hook Studios has dragged it back out for one more expedition.

More than six years after its last DLC and over a decade after the game first launched, Darkest Dungeon is getting a brand-new expansion. The Fire’s Edge arrives today, bringing new heroes, combat mechanics, Trinkets, and Hamlet Districts to a game most of us probably assumed had received its final major update years ago.

The announcement itself came as quite a surprise. Red Hook has spent the past several years building and expanding Darkest Dungeon II, so few would have expected the studio to suddenly turn around and add substantial new content to the original game in 2026. Yet here we are, preparing to head back down the Old Road once again.

Two Familiar Faces Are Heading Back in Time

The biggest additions in The Fire’s Edge are the Runaway and Duelist, two heroes who originally made their debuts in Darkest Dungeon II.

They aren’t simply being dropped into the original game unchanged, either. Red Hook describes them as re-visioned versions designed around the first Darkest Dungeon’s combat systems, giving longtime players two completely new classes to work into their parties.

The Runaway is a flexible damage dealer built around fire and stealth, and her arrival introduces Burn damage to the original Darkest Dungeon. She works particularly well alongside parties using Stuns and abilities that Pull, Knockback, or Shuffle enemies, potentially creating plenty of new party combinations to experiment with.

The Duelist takes a very different approach. She moves between party ranks while switching between Defensive and Aggressive stances, and can maintain Riposte as she fights. Getting the most out of her means thinking several moves ahead, making her sound particularly well suited to players who enjoy squeezing every possible advantage out of Darkest Dungeon’s turn-based battles.

The Hamlet Is Getting Bigger Too

New heroes aren’t the only reason to invest in this DLC. The Fire’s Edge adds three new Hamlet Districts: the Academie Duello, Craftworks, and Archaeological Base Camp. There are also new Trinket mechanics to contend with, including Trigger Uses, Quest Charges, and Progressive Trinkets.

Exactly how much those additions will change an existing campaign remains to be seen, but they give returning players more than two new heroes to experiment with. After six years without new DLC, even seeing the familiar Hamlet gain new buildings feels significant.

More importantly, The Fire’s Edge appears to be connecting the two Darkest Dungeon games in a way we haven’t really seen before. Instead of only moving the series forward through its sequel, Red Hook is taking ideas and characters introduced in Darkest Dungeon II and figuring out how they might work within the very different systems of the game that started it all.

Six Years Later, Darkest Dungeon Isn’t Finished Yet

The timing couldn’t be much better. Darkest Dungeon celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2026, having originally launched in January 2016, and its grim combination of turn-based combat, permanent consequences, stress, disease, and heroes developing some truly unfortunate personality traits has kept players returning to the Hamlet ever since.

That’s what makes The Fire’s Edge such an unexpected release. Darkest Dungeon didn’t feel like a game waiting for its next expansion. Its sequel has been out for years, the original’s previous DLC arrived back in 2020, and there was little reason to think Red Hook was preparing another major reason to return. Apparently, we were wrong.

Darkest Dungeon: The Fire’s Edge launches today for PC, Mac, PlayStation, and Nintendo platforms, with Xbox coming at a later date. The expansion requires the original Darkest Dungeon to play.

After six years without new DLC, the Old Road is calling again. Unfortunately for our heroes, we already know how trips down that particular road tend to end.
