Cute, Cursed, and Completely Unhinged: The Best Horror-Comedy Roguelites

Sacrificing your followers to an ancient god, getting murdered by a disgruntled employee, or raising an army of skeletons from the local graveyard probably shouldn’t be this entertaining. Yet horror-comedy roguelites have made a habit of turning some truly terrible situations into games where dying horribly is half the fun.

From adorable cult leaders and overworked Grim Reapers to murderous farm animals, mutant celebrities, and zombie-infested road trips, these games have a rather unusual sense of humor. Some bury their darker themes beneath colorful cartoon visuals, while others embrace the blood, guts, and general stupidity of their situations, giving players plenty of ridiculous ways to survive, or die trying.

We’ve picked out 10 horror-comedy roguelites that deserve a place in your collection, including a few where the monsters are considerably more lovable than the people they’re trying to kill.

1. Cult of the Lamb

Being sacrificed by a group of mysterious strangers isn’t the best way to start your day, especially when you’re an adorable little lamb who hasn’t done anything to deserve it. However, a mysterious deity known as The One Who Waits, offers you a second chance at life, provided you’re willing to establish a cult in its name. Before long, you’ll be gathering followers, performing rituals, and convincing woodland creatures that worshiping you is an excellent idea.

Developed by Massive Monster, Cult of the Lamb combines roguelite dungeon crawling with cult management, sending players into dangerous regions to battle rival religious leaders while building a thriving community back home. Constructing buildings, delivering sermons, collecting resources, and keeping your followers fed and obedient, you’ll gradually expand your influence while unlocking new weapons and supernatural abilities.

Followers can also become sick, start dissenting, or demand increasingly strange favors, leaving you to decide whether to reward their loyalty or sacrifice them for the greater good.

2. Have a Nice Death

Death has been working himself into an early grave, which is quite an achievement considering he’s already the Grim Reaper. His employees at Death Incorporated have completely lost control, the company’s departments are overflowing with paperwork, and the Sorrows responsible for collecting souls have decided to ignore their boss. With his vacation plans in ruins, Death has finally had enough and is heading downstairs to remind everyone who’s supposed to be in charge.

Created by Magic Design Studios, Have a Nice Death is a hand-drawn action roguelite that sends players through the increasingly chaotic departments of the afterlife. Armed with a trusty scythe, an assortment of weapons, and powerful spells, you’ll battle disgruntled employees, collect upgrades, and confront the Sorrows responsible for the company’s problems. Different curses can dramatically change your abilities, while repeated runs unlock new weapons and opportunities to improve your chances. Between the office politics, sarcastic dialogue, and surprisingly dangerous paperwork, it’s safe to say Death Incorporated won’t be winning any workplace awards.

3. The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

Isaac’s mother has received a message from God demanding that she sacrifice her son, which understandably sends the poor child running for his life. With nowhere else to hide, Isaac escapes through a trapdoor into the basement, only to discover that the rooms beneath his home are crawling with grotesque monsters, disturbing creatures, and some truly unpleasant surprises.

Developed by Nicalis and Edmund McMillen, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is a twisted action roguelike built around procedurally generated dungeons, bizarre power-ups, and an enormous collection of items that can completely transform each run. Items can alter his appearance, grant ridiculous abilities, or create devastating combinations, with hundreds of possible interactions encouraging constant experimentation.

Beneath its cartoon visuals lies a game filled with bodily fluids, religious horror, and some of the strangest enemies you’re ever likely to encounter. There’s a reason this game still remains one of the best selling rogue games of all time so if you haven’t yet checked it out, now is the time to do so.

4. Death Road to Canada

The zombie apocalypse has turned America into a rather unpleasant place to live, leaving Canada as humanity’s last hope for survival. Unfortunately, getting there means driving through thousands of miles of undead-infested territory with a car that might break down at any moment and a collection of survivors who aren’t always the brightest people on the road. There’s also the small problem of finding enough food, fuel, and weapons to keep everyone alive.

Created by Rocketcat Games and Madgarden, Death Road to Canada combines roguelite survival, road-trip management, and zombie-smashing action into a chaotic adventure. Recruiting survivors, exploring abandoned buildings, scavenging supplies, and making decisions during randomly generated events, you’ll gradually work your way toward the Canadian border.

Characters have different personalities, abilities, and questionable habits, while encounters can involve everything from zombie hordes to arguments over food and disastrous attempts at diplomacy. With local cooperative play and plenty of opportunities for things to go horribly wrong, surviving the apocalypse is often less difficult than surviving your travelling companions.

The local townsfolk have decided that raising the dead isn’t a great idea, and they’re sending increasingly angry mobs to put a stop to your necromantic activities. Unfortunately for them, you’re a Boneraiser with an entire graveyard at your disposal, and every fallen enemy is another opportunity to expand your collection of undead servants. Skeletons, demons, and other supernatural horrors are more than happy to do the fighting, leaving you free to concentrate on building the most ridiculous army possible.

Developed by caiys, Boneraiser Minions is a gothic-horror roguelite where players summon and upgrade undead creatures rather than fighting enemies directly. Collecting bones, raising new minions, combining different units, and unlocking powerful abilities, you’ll gradually assemble an army capable of overwhelming the increasingly dangerous heroes trying to destroy you. Different character classes, spells, and upgrades offer plenty of opportunities to experiment with unusual combinations, while its pixel-art presentation and absurd monster designs give the whole experience a distinctly mischievous personality.

Created by Alex Lemley, New Meat is a horror-comedy roguelite combining turn-based combat, dungeon exploration, and an enormous collection of equipment. Progression carries across the five-day workweek before your performance is judged, with twelve possible endings depending on how things unfold. Some even involve surviving long enough to enjoy your wages.

Developed by Milkbar Lads and published by 2 Left Thumbs, Dead Estate is a fast-paced, isometric roguelike shooter that combines classic horror influences with exaggerated pixel-art violence. Choosing from ten playable characters, you’ll fight through monster-filled floors, collect weapons and items, uncover secret areas, and gradually unlock new ways to tackle the mansion.

With 150 weapons, 300 items, and plenty of strange enemies waiting inside, there’s no shortage of opportunities to create ridiculous builds or meet an equally ridiculous end. Its cartoonish presentation and gleefully over-the-top violence make it a good fit for anyone who likes their horror with a healthy dose of absurdity.

8. The Crackpet Show

Fame, fortune, and lucrative sponsorship deals await the contestants of The Crackpet Show, provided they can survive a television program where the entertainment consists almost entirely of adorable animals murdering one another. 10. Atomicrops

Inheriting a farm from your uncle sounds like a fantastic opportunity to escape the pressures of modern life. That is until a nuclear apocalypse destroys the surrounding countryside and turns the local wildlife into bloodthirsty mutants. Fortunately, your crops have survived, but keeping them alive means defending your fields against enormous creatures, gathering supplies from the wasteland, and occasionally finding time to get married. Farming has become a lot more dangerous since the bombs dropped.

Created by Bird Bath Games, Atomicrops combines roguelite shooting with farming simulation, challenging players to grow crops while fighting off waves of mutated enemies. Planting seeds, watering fields, collecting valuable produce, and venturing into dangerous biomes for resources, you’ll gradually expand your farm and purchase new weapons and upgrades.

Friendly townsfolk can become romantic partners, while farm animals and useful equipment help improve your agricultural operation. With big bosses, bizarre mutations, and a constant struggle to keep your crops from being destroyed, this is one farming adventure where a shotgun is just as important as a watering can.
